Has anyone used massage as a therapy (or heck just as a nice treat!) after getting the SCS implant? I know that it wouldn't be a good idea right after surgery as the leads need to become more secure with the scar tissue but I was wondering after that. Have any of you had advantages and/or disadvantages from it? I've got a Dr. appointment next week and I will ask then, but I get so much more out of what you all have to say!!
It's been almost 5 months since the implant so I'm thinking on getting one, and I'll just make sure she doesn't massage the implant and battery area.
Thanks for your feedback!!

I just LOVE a good deep tissue massage [no worries, I will not venture there unless Doc gives the nod] and will be glad to hear of any who have had post-op massages to good effect!

I was getting about 1 a month before I changed jobs. Haven't hade one since then but would love to get one, I just did a lot of education with her before I let her work on me so she knew what areas to watch out for. Before I did my next one she had taken it on herself to do her own research about my SCS, RSD etc. Only problem was I was so relaxed I didnt want to drive home after words!

I have gotten a massage after my implant. I told the therapist that I had one and showed her where the leads were. I personally didn't get any benefit from the massage. It just flared me up and my muscles tensed back up. but that just may be my RSD. If you dont have RSD, I'd say go for it, just slowly introduce massage though. Don't first off get a deep tissue, maybe first just work the muscles a little bit and maybe pressure points and then a soft massage. I just dont think starting off with a extremely deep massage would be good. And make sure you turn your stimulator OFF when you are getting it. Because if he/she puts pressure around the leads you will be jolted with stimulation, and it hurrrts. I learned the hard way. But I'd say GO for a massage! Just slowly introduce and see how your body reacts :)

Oh and thats good advice as well. Get someone to drive you home FOR SURE the first time because you wont know how you react! I was never able to drive home after mine, I literally just dropped. The best ones are the therapists who come to your house. Might be 20 bucks more, but its worth it because you don't have to worry about the drive, and your muscles tensing up again, AND you save gas!!!:):grouphug:

Thanks for all the info guys. The person I go to knows my history and actually has patients with SCS implants so I'm guessing she knows what to expect. I just didn't know if anyone had any thoughts on the issue. I appreciate all your feedback!!!

http://dl5.glitter-graphics.net/pub/2611/2611965iy0kw50lnh.gif (http://www.glitter-graphics.com) no no NO!!! You've got it all WRONG people!!!
ANYwhere is farther from SOMEwhere unless NOwhere leads to EVERYwhere,...in WHICH case, you COULD have taken the shortcut.....besides.....i was under the impression that EVERYthing is TWO WEEKS from the 40 mile bypass to anywhere....... but then...http://dl.glitter-graphics.net/pub/1899/1899471pgbfakkc7b.gif (http://www.glitter-graphics.com) .... this isn't even the right MAP.
Nevermind.
Lord, now i have a headache.

So, I had my first massage since JJ was implanted......HEAVEN!!! :Girl(angel-flying): The person I go to has been giving me massage for a few years so she knows my ALL my history. I thought it interesting that even though I had a LOT of knots and my muscles were very tight, she said my inflamation was down considerably. So, I'm guessing it was due to JJ but I never thought it would reduce inflamation....huh.....who would have thunk it...:Scratch-Head:
Also, does anyone itch around their battery site? I've seemed to notice it more now that I've been more active.
You all are the best!!!

The only time I have had an itchy generator site is when it has been healing or the time I sunburned it:Oops::Blush2:

SO GLAD you are on the up-swing!
I was wondering about massages and howwww to go about getting one.
I mean, I'd be nervous regarding the lead wires and whatnot......
Do you just indicate to the mesooose (?) that you have this in your back and are they just extra 'careful' around that area?
Right? Just avoid having them mess with that area?

Mark & Pooh,
I'm pretty sure the area has healed now. It's been almost 6 months....boy, has it really been almost 6 months already!!! I didn't have the itching until recently when I started exercising more. It's not like I have a rash or anything just noticing that it itches more.....
Rae,
Yes, I showed her where the battery was and where the leads and paddle were so she didn't massage those areas at all. I'm still a little nervous about the leads moving (even with the paddle) and she totally understood. She actually was a bit hesitate to massage those areas as well. Although, I can tell you that the areas of my back where she did massage were still pretty tender.
It's nice to finally start getting my life back and doing things that I haven't did in a really long time!! I actually walked 2 miles at one time this past weekend. The last time I was ABLE to walk/run 2 miles at one time was about 7 years ago. This monster called pain that has clung to me and weighed me down to the point where I didn't think there would be much of a future, if any, was suddenly disappearing with every step I took. I will never ever forget how it made me feel. It will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was first hope.....then freedom.....and then surprisingly faith. Not just the religious aspect but the faith you put in yourself and in others. I believe that you are not given anything you cannot handle (even though we don't believe it at the time). I'm still not completely certain as to why this has been my journey to travel, but I have learned many things along the way and expect to learn even more as I know it is not over yet. Maybe one of the lessons I needed to learn was to have more faith in myself and others.....that I am a strong person and can withstand much adversity; however, if it should get too overwhelming have the faith in others that they will be there for support. You ALL have reinforced my faith in others as well, and I truly THANK YOU for that!!!

Hey KZL!! Bionic Butt Rules!! Hoo-Ah?! And that itch of which I wrote about scratching gently was my own. Itching, itching, twitching so, gotta scratch it gently though.:winky: Gee, maybe I should send that one to our son, and he could develop it into a cadence!?!
Wow, your walking is getting on there, and I am sure with it strength. Anyway, may that tee time go well for you and your strokes fly far and land near tee. You are a hugely important part of this faith journey. Stay the course with us, and see all of us to success!
All the best this weekend,:yahoo:

Yes, I saw a myofacial PT for a short time, She did not accept my insurance. She helped some but not enough to justify the costs:eek:. I also had to remind her each time to be careful when she streached me:cool:
