View Full Version : TV: Downton Abbey
Has this already aired in the USA?
It's only just started here in Australia. It is absolutely delicious.
Makes me wish I had studied set design instead of what I did study. So beautifully set and filmed.
Tonight's quote for me was... "We all have parts to play Matthew, and we all must be allowed to play them". Maybe it's the English in me. Loving it.
wow, no one else love this show? New season starts again in Australia soon. Beautifully made. Loved it and can't wait for more.
Yes, we have this on PBS stations here. It is also offered OnDemand with some cable.
We watched some of this season, on a recommendation of a friend.
It IS very very good. Very realistic and good scripts etc. The acting is also very professional and elegant. A very satisfying view IMO.
Shirley MacLaine is going to be on next season... they are filming it
already, and news items are coming out now about it.
Shirley MacLaine? My heroine. In old England?
I'm not so sure about the acting and all the rest so far but I have an eye for period decoration and costuming. I wish I'd followed my dreams in that direction early in my life.
Here is a collection of "Maggie" moments... I do like this character and she does her soooo well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVMtffzbAwk&feature=related
Thanks for posting that. She's quite wonderful! :D
I'm starting to think that the character Shirley Maclaine plays may be the Aunt/Great Aunt in the USA. Just guessing of course. Maybe Mary does go abroad and stay with her.
They're replaying the first series here as a catch up so the 2nd series must begin soon. I look forward to it. Hope it's not on too late though.

I love the show too Lara but with Series 2 about to start in Australia, we're going to have to wait to see Shirley MacLaine because she doesn't join the cast until Series 3.
... set during the Roaring Twenties. The series will open in 1920 and cover eighteen months.......
Academy Award-winning American actress Shirley MacLaine will join the cast as Martha Levinson, Cora's mother.....
Wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downton_Abbey#Main_cast
From what I can work out, series 2 covers the war years and ends with a Christmas special. They may even be a wedding on the horizon :D
ahhh, so we're a little behind as usual. lol
Thanks for letting me know that Koala.
Haven't loaded the site yet, but I wonder if the wedding is between two of the staff?
I see Scotland opted out of viewing it at first and aired Taggart instead. LOL [really laughing out loud!]
Not that I don't enjoy Taggart myself, but they're like chalk and cheese really. Good to read that they're going to show it afterall.
Lots to look forward to in the future. Some of the critiques suggest that it's not going to be as good as the first series, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it anyway.
 thanks
P.S. Hey, I just noticed we're back in the same timezone.

Ok now you all have me curious. I haven't watched it but my younger sister does and raves about it. I need to go back and start at number 1. :D
My favorite show, SMASH wasn't on last night due to big four basketball...have to see if it's on the computer this morning. Sounds like I'll be sitting on here a long time. *grin

I just became a member of Acorn TV so that I can watch this stuff at home. I watch Doc Martin and LOVE IT! I will start on the downtown Abby one next.
You do need to watch it from the beginning.
[I'm a fan of Doc Martin as well.]
Well, they're showing Gosford Park tonight on the tellie.
Both Gosford Park and Downton Abbey were written by Julian Fellowes. I didn't know that until tonight. I can see the similarities.
I remember the first time I watched Gosford Park thinking how gorgeous Ryan Phillippe was. :o

.... and they both star Maggie Smith as well :D
Sadly Gosford Park doesn't finish until way too late for me tonight, so I'll to have to wait for another day to see it.
I notice they've been advertising the new series of Doc Martin too Lara, but I don't know when it starts.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Downton Abbey. Watching or reading anything about Great Britain, especially during both World Wars is fascinating for me. I'm so glad you're getting a chance to see this fabulous program.

We in Australia are about to start season 3 with Shirley Maclaine, but I think you have already seen that series.
I heard recently that the actors have only recently been signed to do a fourth season, so I guess that means you could have to wait a while. Sorry. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/23/downton-abbey-renewed-season-4_n_2178225.html
We've been waiting patiently for ever so long for series 3 to begin. :(

I believe DA will air on PBS starting the first week of January 2013.
I'm just now finding out about this wonderful series! I've watched the 'Downton Abbey Revisited' to try and get familiar with the characters before watching season 3, but I'd rather see the first 2 seasons before seeing the new episodes.
Where can I find the re-runs? (I'm too cheap to buy the dvd's :o)
I have DirectTV and the only option that comes up when I do a VOD search is the 'Revisited' show.
I guess I could strongly hint to my family that the DVD's would make a great Christmas gift if I can't find the re-runs. :D

First episode of season 3....last night, and thankfully it is on
our OnDemand too!
It is so nice to have it back. I love the kitchen scenes and also
the nifty cars. Shirley sure did arrive in style! LOL
Maggie has some wonderful lines in this episode too!;)

I howled at Maggie!!! That is the latest I've stayed up in a year and tonight, Notre Dame plays Alabama so I'll be up again. Hope I go to bed happy!! :grouphug:
I didn't see many of the first season, and only half of the second.
But it seems that this Earl...whatever his name is, acts like such a wuss. He does things, and what he did to ruin is eldest daughter's attempts at her "romance" was just foolish...and of course he relents, just like he relented with the youngest who ran off with the chauffeur! Was he always like this? Boy-- the fancy men sure do disappoint on this show! The acting is good but the characters are ppppffffftttttt....

Oh thanks for this! I tried to search for Downton Abbey and was shocked that it wasn't in any listing...I'll go search for Masterpiece Classics as soon as I can get a chance at the TV. I watched all of season 1 on Netflix, got hooked, bought season 2 from Amazon Instant Video and now I need to get caught up on season 3 LOL
Tonight will be episode 2 on PBS for Downton Abbey.

Arrgghh...got the season premier, and episode 2 was set to record. But it only recorded the first 2 minutes...so other than the ad for the cruise line, I got nothing! There's a repeat on the 15th, so hopefully it won't malfunction.

I just found a bit of background info on the wonderful place that is used as "Downton Abby"....it is the Victorian Highclere Castle, home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, in Berkshire England (click "about us" to see them )

There are some gorgeous pictures on the site. I really enjoyed looking around the website and getting some of the history :)

I am addicted to DA. It is a fabulous series.
Filmed at Highclere Castle, which has been in the Carnarvon family since 1679. "Reconstruction started in 1842. Estimated rooms, 200-300. 6,000 acres, 1,000 of which are parkland gardens surrounding the house. $240 million reported value. 300 Egyptian artifacts discovered in a secret passageway in 1988. (The current earl's great-grandfather, a famous Egyptologist, jointly discovered King Tut's toomb.) $24,000 approximate rental fee to get married in the same place that Mary and Matthew said "I do." 1,200 number of visitors stop by on days that the house accepts tours."
These facts are published in People magazine, February 4, 2013.

Our daughter was home for a visit and I got her hooked on it! We watched Season one together and I sent her home today with Season 2.
Our oldest daughter was home last week and she had the first season of something called Mid Wife. It's on BBC so we don't get it.
And the new season of SMASH starts Tuesday night.
The continued snowfall is my excuse for not feeling like a giant sloth!!

I'm trying to recuperate or at least improve from a medical injury and its been rough. I never saw Downton Abbey (when it started), so now I went back and watched season one. I'm hooked. Beautiful scenery and interesting characters and plots! Wonderful! :)
Will somebody please PINCH me and tell me it was all a dream!!!
Season 3 did NOT end on that note!
Rae
I don't think it was a dream...but, shocking, yes.
But shows have turned around and explained season endings and
things do go on with soaps at times. We can hope for the best for season 4?
I watched it onDemand in the early morning. If I had seen it
at night it would have wrecked my sleep for sure.
edit to say: I just went to IMDB and discovered that "it was not
a dream".... what is , what is.
Alffe
02-19-2013, 04:19 PM
What is IMDB? And I am still in disbelief! :grouphug:
IMDB is a huge database on all the entertainment.
It has discussion of each show, movie etc. Tells when the
next season starts, biographies of the actors, etc.
Just type in IMDB into Google. We consult it all the time.;)
:o Curiosity got the better of me lol, I had to go see what you were all talking about so cryptically. We are way behind.
We are trying to be polite, Lara... no spoilers!
Oh you're all being exceptionally polite. The problem is me. It got the better of me and I just had to know. lol

02-21-2013, 01:11 PM
Omgoodness! I was speechless. That was a very unexpected ending to Season 3. And, now we have to wait until Season 4. BTW - that was a short season - six weeks or so? When does Season 4 start?
Alffe
02-21-2013, 03:35 PM
I wondered the same thing tkrik...too short and when will Season 4 begin??
Well, I noticed that some of these shows were 2 hrs long.
Maybe that is why it seems shorter? But then, maybe too,
the castle is not available at certain times, so filming has to
rotate around that fact?
I think it is a very intense show... I don't mind shorter seasons.
I don't know if I could handle longer ones! ????:o
tkrik
02-23-2013, 11:19 AM
Very good point, mrsD. Some of the episodes were longer.
Season 4 doesn't begin in the US until January 2014. I'm going to have to watch Season 3 again as a refresher. :D
Comcast is having free Streampix Infinity this week (this is without the usual charge for each month's use they typically do).
So I am catching up on the First Season and the first part of
Season 2, I missed when I "discovered" Downton.
Things make much more sense to me now! ;)
I really like the style of the Season 1... now it appears that
things are going to be more emotionally embroiling as the series
continues. I thought the Fox Hunt was very well done, I enjoyed that (since there was no obvious animal cruelty). I did find a link to a discussion of Downton:
http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3199571&st=2175
There are no spoiler alerts there, so if you haven't seen all of the shows, you won't want to read that link.
This article discusses what we can look forward to in
Season 4.

By Meredith Blake
February 18, 2013, 7:00 a.m.
Just wondering, is it possible for a show to make you clinically depressed? And if so, what are the chances I can submit my therapy bills directly to Julian Fellowes (http://www.latimes.com/topic/entertainment/julian-fellowes-PECLB0000011364.topic) for reimbursement?
I thought Meredith Blakes review was hilarious!!! And the comments...people really feel strongly one way or the other. :D
I saw that article.... I have to say...the last episode of
Season 3 was disturbing. In fact I find myself quite emotional, watching these earlier episodes now, too.
Julian should be careful he doesn't alienate his viewers! It happens now with novels, and Eliz George really got into trouble by killing off a very loving and popular character for "no reason"... her fans deserted her, and she had to close her website which was very popular at the time. Her books have not recovered in fact from that event! (her Lyndley/Havers series)
Matthew had to leave the show, it was the actor's choice. But it was Julian's choice in how it would unfold.
I am wondering if Season 4 will succeed... as much as the others have.
