View Full Version : Do you take anything for allergies?

My son has the normal allergies like pollen ragweed and dust, he now takes singular for it and he used to take zyrtek, so far so good with the sigular. I used to take allergra, but found it didn't work as well as zyrtek did for my allergies. I haven't tried singular, but I am sure it's helping my son because he's not nearly as congested as he was before starting on singular recently. :)

PS. Thanks for this new forum! Glad to be the first one to post a thread here. LOL! :D

Forgot to mention he has autism and seizure disorder along with his normal allergies. ;)

Hi Pamster

my son has shown noticeable seasonal allergies for the first time this year with our drought here in Central Florida and lots of pollen everywhere

His doc has prescribed Flonase and zyrtec, but the insurance wont cover the z so Doc said to get Claritin.
However
my son is very reluctant to use them and is trying acupuncture and Bach's Flower remedy which seem to be helping some

My son has Tourette Syndrome and Crohn's Disease

I have dustmite allergy and some other sensitivities but so far my saline spray seems to work ok for me, along with Bach's Remedy

Zyrtec is what I take; my doctor had Rx'd Claritin in the past (a number of years ago) but it wasn't nearly as effective - for me -as the Zyrtec.

I hadn't heard of Singular, yet I will ask my doctor about it. If it won't conflict with my heart probs. or medication, I wouldn't mind trying it - to find out if it might work even better than the Zyrtec.

I understand totally about the drought, the rain helps clean the air and lower the pollen count, I definitely notice a difference when we don't have regular rain spells. I haven't tried claritin before but I can say that zrytec worked really well for both of us. I haven't heard of saline sprays before, did you just get like contact solution saline or regular saline and put it in a nasal spryer or did you buy it that way? Also is Bach's Remedy a natural approach you get at health food stores? Haven't heard of it before is why I ask. ;)

I haven't tried Singular myself or I would be able to tell you if it worked better for me then zyrtec, I know that it is helping my son though, he finally is breathing better and doesn't sound congested all the time and isn't having nasal discharge like he was getting a few weeks ago. :)

Hi Pamster

the saline nasal spray comes ready prepared and available at all drugstores, health stores and even some supermarkets......or one can make it at home (i have a recipe somewhere from my dad, who always used it for his sinuses instead of prescription ones)

it really clears that dry stuffy nose feeling too

The Bach's Remedy is available at health stores....there are a range of them for different needs.

we always have Bach's Rescue Remedy, made from extracted flower essences
available....not only good with allergy etc but UNSURPASSED in its ability to bring instant calm to anyone having anxiety, panic, stress etc
:)

That sounds like something that might be good to have on hand, I will have to check out the local health food store, thanks for the recommendation. :D

I'll also check into the saline spray my husband couuld use that instead of the other nasay spray that he uses and he would probably feel a lot better from it. Thanks again Chemar! I think this forum is a great addition to Neurtalk. :D

I carry a bottle of rescue remedy with me at all times. :) It's not so great with full blown panic attack but very useful for settling down my naturally high anxiety levels. What I call background noise.

This year seems to particularly bad for my allergies so far. I usually just suffer a little, nothing so bad that a surreptitious dabbing or even a quick wipe on the shirt sleeve (:D) wouldn't cure.
I've never seen an allergist, but seem to be allergic to dust, pollen, and mold. This year it has been so bad I developed bronchitis from it, so I have been taking a store brand version of Benadryl at night. My Dr also gave me Flonase, which I didn't find particularly helpful. I don't like to take the allergy tablet during the day because it makes me drowsy.
I'm going to check into this forum frequently, and hope to glean a lot of useful info from all of you experts, so keep posting, and thanks, DocJohn, for the forum!
Hugs,

Lois,

I tried Flonase once, too, and it also didn't do anything.

My allergies are alfalfa and grass (lawn); it's particularly bad when lawns are mowed. If I could just convince everyone to mow their lawns on the same day of the week at the same time every week, I think I'd feel a whole lot better. Not much chance in that happening, though, huh ;).

Bobbi, my Dad was allergic to cut grass, along with about a hundred other things. Weird things, like elephants! I'm just grateful I don't have anywhere near the problems he did.
Hope you don't have to cut your own grass! Talk about adding insult to injury!

So far, knock on wood, I've not had to cut my grass. Unless I get an ATV type chair or scooter that can help me, I have my lawn mowed. I keep the house closed up while the lawn is cut and afterward.

There is also something else that floats about airborne that sets off a reaction. I'm not sure what it is, though. I suspect it might be hay. I'm in a rural area where alfalfa and hay are harvested.

What's the "killer" is the loss of my eyelashes; they fall out when the allergies are this bad. I guess it's better they all fall out rather than having just a few. I prefer having none... since it's easier than having only a couple. That seems to draw more attention from "strangers."

I had floniase and it did nothing for me either. :p I definitely feel it when they get the grass done here. I think the singular is working good for Jackie though. So that's good news. :D

hmmmm
seems Flonase is not very highly regarded then by those who have tried it?

my son refuses to even try it as he is so afraid it will trigger more tics etc

so far he seems to be ok with the saline spray, Bach's and 24/7 Hepa filters and A/C

we REALLY need rain here in central Florida.
i have lived here since 1991 and have not experienced a drought like this before, with this much pollen everywhere

I wonder if this very disturbing news of the disappearing bee colonies is also having an impact on the high pollen levels all around the country this year?
Guess it must be!

I saw saline nasal spray for the first time today at Walgreens, I am glad to have gotten a heads up on it from you Chemar, thank you for sharing that tidbit with me. ;) I am going to pick it up next time I am out, didn't have time today or I would have, had to rush off to an outing at the local high school for my son. :)

Very interesting thread.

Allergies and asthma. Are things I have to deal with.

I use nasonex for allergies. And I use advair and xopenex hfa now.

I used asmanex at first for almost 6 months it didn't work as well
as it should. I'm allergic to dust mites, mold and ragweed.

I'm having trouble with my allergy shots, that I've been taking
for almost 6 months.

I take Allegra D, works well, but then I use a nasal steroid spray (Nasonex) during my worst time which is ragweed season. I also have a eye drop Patanol that I love

A old trick from my ancestors and elders is just to flush the nose out with warm water.

Up here in Alaska, the rural community used what we had on hand to combat allergies, and my grandmother would stick my head over a pot with slow boiling chamomile tea in it and put a towel over my head.

I would get either the nose/sinus flush two times per day (bad pollen season) or a face steam once a day...I see nowadays the stores actually have a teapot looking like device that would flush out the nose and sinus'.

great advice there Kim

My dad always made his own saline nasal spray and the vaporizer method is very popular with our family.

I can't use Flonase or any of the perscription nose sprays as I am allergic to them. Though one thing that I use in my room is a humidifier and I also use a salean solution too on bad days. It seems to help a lot. Though now I have asthma on top of my allergies so it's just not fun. I have learned to just try to avoid things that I am allergic to.

Though my great aunt told me to go on a diet of eating for my blood type and lots of vetitables that are organic. I've learned a lot about this diet and it seems like it would work, but I just have to be able to keep a steady job so I can afford that stuff. Another good thing to do is to also take probiotics for a few months and eat lot's of veggies and fruit.
