One of the easiest ways I've found for getting a comfort level, is to read other threads to see if I can add any input to them.

Once I've done that a few times, and get used to the routine, I would generally introduce myself on a new thread, telling a little about my dx, my family (generally, no names etc.), lifestyle, interests, etc.

Whatever makes YOU comfortable is fine by us.
