The title should say "has" not had.

DH had a hernia a long time ago than about 3 years ago he had it fixed while the surgeon was in there he saw there was another one but did NOT fix it at the same time. Well DH got the other one fixed last year (new Dr this time) but than the same day the Dr toke the stitches out it came open again, the inside and the skin just opened right up. :thud:
So the Dr went back in and fixed it again.
It still reopened on the inside again just a few months later.
After living with it for a few months it was hurting too much so we found a new Dr again and had it fix again 2 months ago. Well DH is in pain again and the bulge is back (BTW all of these have been in the abdominal area) so Dr had a CT scan done Friday and she called DH this morning with the news.
There is a NEW hernia. :thud:
How much can my DH handle? These surgeries are very hard on him, they always say at most your only stay one night, he's alway there a week. He doesn't handle the meds well and always gets very ill. :Sob: You know how much it hurts to throw up right after hernia surgery and the anti nausea meds make you even sicker. :(

I'm just curious why they keep coming back??

I've seen men with hernias. My landlord who is 82 has one and he's showed it to me. They kept telling him to have it taken care of but he won't go near a doctor.

Hey, he smokes at least 4 packs a day, he's 82, his mother lived to 105, and his son just married for the first time and had a baby at age 53, so this guy's has GOOD GENES going on in his body.

I feel for your husband.

Over and over he has had this happen. He deserves a break here.

Take care,
Melody

Thank you.
I don't know why they keep coming back. We both understand the one that reopened but why the others? Not counting the reopening of one he has have 4 different hernias.

maybe an odd question...but does he have a belly? :o

weak ab muscles contribute to get abdominal hernias. the muscles get too thin and spread a part. then the protrution happens.

Now see I was sure this was true but Dr.'s keep saying NO.
Anyway when the 1st came up he was a few pounds over weight and mostly in his belly but than as time goes on and he has more surgeries he's just getting larger and is now having a hard time losing the weight. He doesn't even eat much and walks as much as he can handle.

the muscles in your stomach are like if you hold your hands, fingers entwined. tight ab muscles...like a tight grip. as the stomach muscles weaken and the belly protrudes, it's like pulling the hands a part. the bands of muscles can't hold together.

some people have a genetic weak area in the abdominal muscles. from my experience in the gyms, it's seen more on the "beer belly" types. it does not mean the persaon drank beer to get that belly. many factors can contribute to that type of "gut".

i really am surprised his dr has not rx'ed exercise to strengthen his ab muscles to keep any other hernias from developing. :(

Thanks.
And you know now DH is really scared to try to exercise using those muscles.

he doesn't have to do crunches or sit ups.

have him just suck it in ( hehe..like we woman do ) and hold it for 4 or 5 seconds. do this a few times. keep adding a few more daily, then add the length of the suck in time after he feels comfortable.

it's a starting place to get the muscles working again. we know from having babies, they don't go back overnight. we do start lifting those babies right away. men don't tend to do that after surgery. :)

hope this all works out and he doesn't have to have another surgery.

That's so funny, when I was losing weight I would wear tops there were a little tight around my belly and would hold me belly in went out shopping and just around others. I did see that it was working and my tummy was getting flatter and toned fast. :D I even told others to try it but I don't think they believed me.
Thank you, BTW I PMed you a pic of his belly, LOL. :D
