Okay, Curious, I give it up to you...(Idealist bows in deep respect to the master). The fate of my weight is in your hands! ;)
So tell me, huh? huh?, what's a poor ol' skinny guy gonna do to put on twenty or so pounds without gaining himself a gargantuan "love-handle"? :p (By the way, you'd be luck to pinch an inch right now.)
I don't know that I could do the ensure thing. I strongly dislike "thick" or syrupy drinks. I don't drink more than half-a-dozen sodas in a year. I pretty much just stick to my teas and my decaf coffee.
The med he prescribed is actually a tricyclic antidepressant. You may have heard of it, it's called amitriptylene. But he prescribed it in mega doses. I took it once before for sleep, at 25mg. Now I'm supposed to take 150mg every night! According to what I can find, 150mg is the maximum daily dose, but it's usually spread out over three times a day. My doc wants me to take it all at once, just before I climb in bed, 'cause it might have some "weird" side-effects for a while...
I don't much care for sweets. I like very lean foods. My favorite kind of chicken is a plain white chicken breast baked in the oven with no oil, butter or spices at all to flavor it. So you can see my problem here. I'd be happy if I could put on FIVE pounds in the next thirty days, let alone FIFTEEN!
Help me out here, my friend. Please...:o

Hi there .... I'm just wondering about your new med. Are you going to be starting at a lower dose and then increasing it to 150 mg? It just seems like a lot to be taking at once .... especially since your doctor said it might have some 'weird' side effects.
Idealist
11-01-2006, 09:00 PM
Smart question, Scrabble...;) Yeah, actually I'm starting on 50, increasing to 100 after a week, and then to 150 in another week.
But when I looked up the med in my "pill book", at such a dosage it listed as "most common side-effects" such things as hallucinations, disorientation, and quite a few other disturbing things. I don't like the sound of that at all!
If they start making me feel too weird, I'll stop taking them. I trust my doc, I really do. But I trust my body more.
So how was your day, Scrabble, dear? :)

~KELLWANTSANSWERS~
11-01-2006, 09:06 PM
My crazy neuro put me on this topamax. You have to increase slowly with this med too!!
He told me .Oh just increase up to 200mg.I asked him, should'nt i go slow?He said your fine.Just take an extra pill.I did'nt know any better back then.Well lo and behold..I broke out in one of the worst rashes i ever had in my life!!!!
Also i felt REALLY funny in the head!!When i called ..He says maybe we adjust your dose down to 150mg..DUH!!!YATHINK???
So sometimes they dont know best.I always read up on the meds.I also read up on interactions..

Well I'm glad you aren't taking it all at once to start out with!
I went through some weird 'stuff' while starting an AD a while ago. (Wellbutrin) I had very vivid dreams for a while that were rather strange. I didn't always remember what I had been dreaming about but when I did recall, it seemed that I was trying to do something or solve something and I would wake up feeling agitated and restless. I ended up trying to take my 2 doses farther away from bedtime and that seemed to help in the end. Initially I was told by my doctor to take one dose just before going to bed to avoid having an upset stomach. Luckily I didn't have that problem though.
*waves at Kell! :)

Hey, Kell-Bell!!! How ya doin'? I was off writing somewhere else for a few minutes. How are you feeling after all that cleaning?

Kitty proofed your house???
(I know what you mean ... I just initially read that as if it was your cat, named Kitty, who had proofed your house after you cleaned it!) hee-hee!

11-01-2006, 09:24 PM
Ooohh. Thanks for that, Scrabble. And you too, Kell. I absolutely HATE having weird, vivid dreams. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is, without seeing Freddie Krueger in my dreams...
I think I'm gonna start off at 25mg and take it from there. I really think the doc is over-playing the whole thing a bit. It's not like I'm starving to death or anything...

LOL @scrabble.I went back and read it after you said that and it does kinda read that way:D
Funny!!:)
Having kitties run around is similar to having little kids running around.I have to make sure theres nothing that can hurt them..Since i have not felt like doing much. There was much to do..HeeHee
I'm still not finished.I m doing it in increments-otherwise i will be in massive pain!

Kell's post about her rash reminded me that a long time ago when I was trying all kinds of meds to try and get some sleep .... that I would wake up in the night and get to the washroom (because I had to drink a full glass of water with the sleep med at bedtime) and I was so out of it that I literally stumbled from one wall to the other in my short hallway. I felt horrible! Really spaced out and yet not any more rested by morning. I was worried I might fall down the stairs (beside the bathroom doorway) or that if my kids needed me in the night that they wouldn't be able to wake me! Well, I talked to my doc and it turned out that the dose was just too high for me because I had lost about 20 pounds due to stress. I just thought of that because you've lost weight, Idealist. Hopefully, your doctor has taken that into consideration though, since he is the one who wants you to gain some weight. ;)

sheesh...night owls are supposed to up late.
idealist...what you eat is fine. you just have to start eating more often. even if it is little snacks. some nuts. cheese. fruit. i know you said you like ( love? :p ) bread. a slice of bread with peanut butter.
boost and insure are more like thick chocolate milk ( or vanilla or strawberry) do you like milk shakes? yogurt? make fruit smoothies.
even making pasta salad with the chicken breast.
not eating can become a habit. your stomach shrinks. you get full faster and don't get the feeling of hunger as often.
eating an also be a social thing. if you are home alone during the day...it is easy to skip a meal.
my dad is on provigal. it speeds him up. he actully gets the munchies. i thinkhe weighs about 140...but he was 175-180 when he was dx'ed with pd. he does eat lots of dark choccy. :D

Just home from running errands after work ... and I have to change into stretchy clothes before going back out in the rain to go to my Pilates class. It's already dark and I'm feeling very tired ... so it would be easy to just curl up on the couch and stay home .... BUT I'm going to push myself to go because I know it will feel good to do it.

Good for you, Scrabble. Thinking ahead. Might be tough in the short run but later you'll feel a lot better...:)
I like the pasta salad idea, Curious. And I like nuts, cheese & most fruits. But I ain't big on milkshakes except once in a while.
I think you're right about the stomach shrinking and the social eating. I can't hardly eat a whole sandwich without getting full, and I do spend a lot of time at home alone. That's mostly when I forget to eat.
The thing I hate most are those times when eating just becomes a chore. No matter what it is I'm trying to eat, sometimes it seems like I have to just choke it down, and it's hard.
How about boiled eggs? Cottage cheese? Cream cheese on toast? I like those things for breakfast. Are they healthy enough?
Thanks for the help, dear. Like it or not, I guess I gotta take this thing seriously (sigh)...:o
Curious
11-02-2006, 10:27 PM
yeppers buddy..all those are wonderful.
but...what i would like for you to do is not make a whole sandwich to eat at once. cut it up into 1/4's and put them in baggies. think small and often.:D
it is also phycological. you fix a whole sandwich...can't eat it all. you feel let down on yourself..and wasteful. so eat just a piece and know your buddy will be sooo proud of you!
i can see from the foods you like...they are also what your body is starving for...protien. complex carbs. brain food! don't worry about milk shakes and stuff like that.
and you know what...fix something to eat and come here and socialize while you eat. :D
add some nuts to a pasta salad for extra crunch...calories and lots of nutrition. and don't forget to share! :p

The food ideas sound good to me.
I've been helping my daughter to roll out the sugar cookie dough from last night and she is using the Halloween cookie cutters. The last pan is in the oven and we'll decorate some before I head to bed. She'll have time tomorrow to finish decorating them before her Pathfinders sleep-over since she gets off early from school on Friday.
On my way home from Pilates in the rain ... I was thinking about how the grade 4 class I've been working in will be studying earthworms tomorrow. The students are all supposed to bring in a live earthworm in a container with dirt. I'm not too fond of earthworms ... but I don't want to appear squeamish as I don't want to pass on my feelings to the kids. So .... I was thinking that maybe I should dig up a worm to take to school too. However it was dark and really raining and I just wanted to get indoors. I was walking across the courtyard in front of my house when I saw 2 earthworms on the sidewalk. So ... I went inside and found a clear plastic container (from the deli). I was hoping that I could get a worm to just crawl into my container but that obviously wasn't going to happen. The bigger worm was already most of the way into the grass and soil ... and I wasn't too unhappy to see him disappear! I tried to coax the other worm and he just wriggled around and basically stayed stuck to the wet pavement. I really didn't want to have to pick it up .... but then I thought about the kids doing it tomorrow so I decided I should give it a try so I could get used to it. (Yuck!) I couldn't pick it up though because I couldn't get a grip on it and I didn't want to squish it. I tried flicking it and tickling it ... and when it was more curled up I was finally able to get part of it in the container so I could use the lid to push it all the way in. (*shiver) Then I used the edge of the lid to scoop a bit of wet soil from one of my plant pots into the container with the worm. Done! I put the container by the door with a note on it that says: "Mom's earthworm for school". I sure didn't want one of my kids to come home and ditch it!

LOL @ Chemar! I hadn't thought of that! :)
Kell, I certainly was not singin' in the rain last night! And I did think about what I must look like as I was squatting there for so long.
I'm only filling in at the elementary school for the past 3 days. On the first day the teacher talked about the pet reports that the kids are researching and she said the best pet in the world is a cat. Then she proceeded to read a book about a dog and another book about a cat. So yesterday ... I wore a sweater with various cats that are knit into the pattern. After the earthworm discussion I said to one girl: "Gee, I don't know if I have a sweater with earthworms on it to wear tomorrow ..." I told her that I do have one with butterflies on it and she said "that will do!" I hate to disappoint her but I remembered that my butterfly sweater is mainly white and I don't want to risk getting earthworm dirt smeared on it. (The butterflies are made of coloured ribbon, sequins and beads.) Maybe I'll wear my gecko earrings ..... Hmmmmm...... I do have a red sweater with a cute puppy in the middle of a pile of leaves ...

I've ended my week off well ... I just phoned my Mom long distance so I could tell her about my day ...
The grade 4 student that I worked with for the past 3 days managed very well with me being the substitute Educational Assistant for him. I also had a phone call this afternoon from a principal at another elementary school. I had applied for a 2-day/week job at that school a few weeks ago and the job went to someone with more seniority than I have. However, turns out that Assistant isn't staying in the job because she got another job so the principal wants to see me before school on Monday morning to discuss the position. :) It would be on Mondays and Fridays so I would remain on-call for the other 3 days/week BUT the good thing is that my rate of pay will go back up to the regular employee rate (instead of the Spareboard rate). :D Also, I would be able to take advantage of the sick time I have banked from when I did have a regular 5-day/week position. (I was sick on this past Monday so that meant I didn't get paid. ) Anyway, I'll find out on Monday if I'm going to be doing the job so keep your fingers crossed for me! :D

I'll keep all my fingers and toes crossed that you get that job on monday. 'Course, that might make it hard to type...or walk...:p Good luck, Dear.
My day was fairly nice, too. My Mom took me out to lunch today at an Italtian restaurant I like. And afterward my Dad gave me a car! Not brand new, of course, but in very good shape. He even licensed it, insured it, and filled the tank with gas! All I have to do is drive it...:p

Idealist
11-03-2006, 10:18 PM
I had a small salad and two slices of pepperoni pizza! For me that's a big lunch. Most I've eaten at one time in weeks. And I enjoyed it, too!
I do have nice parents, especially when it comes to Mom. She calls just about every day to check on me and see how I'm doing. And she's always bringing me books & videos, and inviting me out to lunch.
My Dad's nice, too, but he can be a pretty hard man sometimes. Just the way he was raised. But lately he seems to be going to great lengths to mend fences with me, and frankly, I don't quite know how to take it.

11-03-2006, 10:25 PM
How about if you try to accept it graciously? :)
Nice to hear how good your mom is with looking out for you. And lucky that your parents are there. I only see my parents a few times a year since we live so far apart. My parents are really wonderful and my kids are their only grandchildren. We are all glad that I'm flying out with my kids for Christmas with them! :)
Lunch sounds good ... I had a salad in the staffroom with mixed baby greens, some wildrice salad with pecans and sweet peppers, and cottage cheese. I also had a banana for a snack with a raspberry yogurt drink.
Idealist
11-03-2006, 10:32 PM
Accept it graciously??? Hmmm...now there's a thought...:p
Hey, I ain't complainin'! I'm just wonderin' where it's all comin' from. He did let slip today that he's planning on re-opening the auto-repair shop with a certain fellow he has hired, and he's hoping that since I have wheels now I'll be able to slip out there once in a while to help train the guy. I know a lot more about modern automotive electronics than my Dad does, or anyone else in this county, as a matter of fact. Not braggin'...really...just stating a fact...
~scrabble
11-03-2006, 10:34 PM
Cool! I didn't think you were bragging .... that just doesn't seem like your style. :)
So do you think you would want to help out or would feel up to doing that at your dad's shop?
Idealist
11-03-2006, 10:42 PM
I could probably do some teaching. It wouldn't be the first person that I've trained. I've worked on cars since I was five years old...:p
But there's no way I could do anything hands-on, especially under the hood. I have chronic abdominal pain, and leaning over those fenders would just torture me.
Besides electronics, I also used to specialize in automatic transmission overhauls. But, as you probably know from being a teacher yourself, how much you can teach someone depends as much on their skill as a student as it does your skill as a teacher. I know the fellow my Dad has hired, and even though he's a fair "back-yard mechanic", I'm less than sure about his ability to become a true technician.
Still, it would get me out of the house, and maybe make me feel useful again. So I'll probably at least try it for a while, if me and my Dad can get along...
~scrabble
11-03-2006, 10:47 PM
I hope you do give it a try. It would be good to get out and doing something you like to do.
Yes, I certainly do know how difficult it can be to teach some people! A person's attitude and behaviour as well as their skills can have a lot to do with whether or not they learn from you.
Idealist
11-03-2006, 10:53 PM
Don't I know it! Maybe you can give me some good teaching tips. I ain't above borrowing other people's brains once in a while...:p
But I'd still rather find a way to do work similar to yours. I think that would be a lot more satisfying than auto mechanics. I've always been very good at it, but to be totally honest, I have also always strongly disliked that career. I'd rather be around people than machines.
Are you still glad that you changed careers mid-stride like you did? Have you ever regretted it? 'Cause you sound so involved with what you do. Like you've found your place in the world.

I do enjoy what I'm doing now. :) It has a lot of challenges and I'm learning all the time ... There are days when I'm exhausted (or bored) and days when I feel threatened .... BUT ...the little rewarding experiences along the way sure do make it worthwhile.
The grade 12 student with Autism who I worked with for most of last year, was an interesting guy and when he was graduating he really wanted me to be there. (I had been going to the rehearsals with him to help him to understand where he was supposed to walk, how to hand his name card to the announcer - behind her back - and then where to sit on the stage.) He was so proud to be up there with all of the other grade 12 students and I was pleased to be in the audience with his parents and another Assistant. On the very last day of school, the student and I said 'good bye' and he hugged me! It was just a small thing but it meant a lot, especially because he often kept his feelings and emotions inside. :)
I've never wished that I had not made the career change that I did. I have wished for more job security, more pay, more benefits.... but, to me, enjoying what I am doing and feeling I'm doing something worthwhile for others is what is most important. :)

i spent the day with my x here. since he has split with his wife and litterly just got his clothes, i gave him furniture and some household stuff i had in my garage. our(my?) son brought him over.
i introduced him to his grandson, grandmonkey. grandmonkey has only seen him at ball games of bubbamonkeys. knew he was bubba's dad, but didn't understand the connection. my x's wife never would let him have contact with me or grandmonkey. so we would sit for the last 13 years...not say a word, but sit on the same side. nuts huh? plus he has a son with her that is a couple of days younger than lil'monkey. so they have grown up, not allowed by his wife to play or talk to eachother.

As for teaching tips ... everyone is different in the way they learn best. That being said, I often find that demonstrating can be helpful instead of just talking about it or having someone read about how to do something. Recognizing people's efforts is important too, not just their successes. And sometimes stickers work wonders! (OK, maybe that last tip won't be as useful to you .... ;) )

first thing my x did was apologize and apologize. he knows he and his wife put me through 13 years of h*ll. i can't get back all that i missed. but i hold no grudge and gave him my forgiveness. they caused me years of holidays alone. missed birthdays and all family celebrations. took away family from me that i considered mine since i was 16. the pain and hurt wasn't just mine. but the monkeys suffered even more.
but we have a bright future. grandmonkey has a new grandpa and a huge new extended family...great grand parents....dozens and of aunts and uncles...cousins....all to love him!!:D ( i had better start on my christmas card now! )
before he left my x said he now knows why his wife made him cut all ties with me...cuz i'm still the wonderful and beautiful girl he married.

A small thing?!!? Scrabble, that must have felt AWESOME! Now see, that's the kind of reward I want to get from my work. Not only the appreciation, but the knowledge that I've helped change someone's life for the better in a long-term way.
As for teaching, my biggest problem seems to be "talking over people's heads". I use big words and advanced vocabulary without even realizing it. One woman asked me once to exlain how an electrical circuit worked, and before I could stop myself I had launched into a lecture about the physical nature of electrons and the physics involved in propelling electron transfer between atoms. I've even had a doc once ask me if I could explain my medical problems in "lay-man's terms", 'cause he didn't know the terminology I was using...:p
Curious...I'm sorry :( ...and congratulations! :D It sounds like both are in order here. It must be a bitter-sweet experience for you, huh? But I have very great faith in your ability to not only handle it, but to make the very best of it...;) You're quite a gal, ya know.

One woman asked me once to exlain how an electrical circuit worked, and before I could stop myself I had launched into a lecture about the physical nature of electrons and the physics involved in propelling electron transfer between atoms.

shoot...lost my last post. i have a bad connection tonight.
it should be alot different. hubby has even said that my x is welcome here anytime.
sistrmonkey hs been up inthe air about coming home for the holidays. it was such a hassle with his wife when she was here in april. i hadn't seen her for months. i got to see her for 1 day. :( they would tell her they were bringing her to my house....so i wouldn't have to drive so far with gradnmonkey. ( can take 2 hours cuz of dallas traffic) then my x' wife would change stuff. finally the night before her flight...i just went and got her.
gradnmonkey was confussed at first. but not like my x was a complete stranger. he has seen him at every game his whole life.
i am very thankful that my hubby is being so gracious. but he loves the monkeys...and never ever do a thing to hurt them. plus....hehehe...maybe....ole new grandpa might come over and babysit. :D

Oh! It's a lovely spring-green color. Nice little Dodge, small and sporty, with decent power yet good gas mileage. It's really a nice car. And best of all, nobody's name will be on the title but mine! So I don't have to listen to any fussing about whether I should be out driving or not...

very good!! some independence.
i hate the housebound feeling. even when i have my own car here...24/7...when little things change to stop me from going out daily, i find that a whole week can go by and don't go anywhere. and then i get were i don't want to.
hubby has been taking lil'monkey to school. she walks to the club now afterschool. so...here i am at home. never took my car out once. i know hubby is doing it to hekp me. driving a zoom zoom stick shift can be killer on my back. but i keep thinking if i do less...then i will be able to do less. make sense or am i wacky?

Makes perfect sense to me, Curious. That's the same way I feel. Maybe I'm half-monkey without even knowing it? ;)
This car is a stick-shift, too. I love that. I haven't driven but three times in the last four years, and those were all two miles or less. For a long time I wasn't supposed to drive because of the meds they had me on. But heck, I've been off those for nearly ten months now. I still take one narcotic, and Xanax intermittently for sleep, but I take them both in smaller doses. And I would never drive if I felt I was impaired in any way.
I know I can't do any long trips, but all I want is a way to get to the grocery store or the post office when I want. Or pick the kiddos up from school, especially if one of them gets sick and the nurse calls. I'm totally confident in my ability to do that. Heck, my driving record is spotless after twenty-eight years...not a single ticket! And I specialize in cars, for goodness sake!
I don't think Miss Curious could ever survive without her wheels. Too much energy to keep cooped up in one house for too long...:p

I've had a low-key weekend of sleeping, reading and watching TV while working on my rag rug. This afternoon I had a nice long bath and I had just changed into fresh PJ's when my daughter told me our Fimo (modeling medium that you bake in the oven) that she needed for a school project was all too dry and crumbly and we needed to buy more. 5:30 pm on a Sunday and she starts phoning stores to see if any are still open. Michael's craft store stays open until 7pm so I go back upstairs to change into clothes. Pouring rain outside and my hair is still wet from my bath. My daughter's project isn't due until Wed. but she has yoga and jazz after school tomorrow and I have Hip Hop so we thought we had better head out to catch the bus. After buying 8 packages of Sculpey we walked up to Moxie's restaurant for dinner which was nice. I think I have enough leftovers for lunch tomorrow too. Then we had to wait 20 minutes for the bus so we went into a grocery store to warm up and buy a few things. 2 buses later, with another wait in the rain between buses, we arrived home at 9:15 pm and I'm really exhausted. But what a good Mom, I am, right?
Kell, I had started taking Echinacea and Cold-FX last Monday when I stayed home with a sore throat but I stopped taking it a couple of days later because I felt better. So I'm taking more again. ~sigh~
Idealist, I hope you get the car tomorrow and then do something fun!

Thats a no-no:p
You need to take it for at least 7 days!At least thats what has always worked for me.I dont usually take it any longer than that because i dont want to become immune to its affects.
When will the rain ever let up there??
Get well wishes coming your way today girlie!

I didn't pick up my wheels today...:( It wasn't a good day for me. 'Course I did most of it to myself. I woke up feeling so good that I decided to skip my pain meds, and boy was that a mistake. It's a whole lot easier to prevent the pain than it is to control it once it sets in good. Somehow I keep forgetting that...

I left early to take 2 buses to the elementary school so I could meet with the principal before school started today. I bundled up well, wore a rain hat AND I had my umbrella.:) After I mopped up, the principal shook my hand as he whizzed by saying he had to go see some drains outside and clear away the leaves. 45 minutes later .... I was still in the staffroom waiting to meet with him. We had a chat in his office and then he gave me a tour and I joined a grade 2 class for 8 minutes. LOL I would have been there for 30 minutes if I had been able to start on time. Then I was in a grade 5 class with a boy with Autism who was really having a difficult time. He wouldn't sit at his desk and just wanted to talk to his plastic dinosaurs. I got him to tell me about them but he wouldn't make much eye contact with me. Eventually I managed to get him to sit long enough to do one division question (and that was mainly because the principal had cruised by and bribed him with a sticker if he did it!) By lunch I was ready to just sit. Then I was called to the phone ... Human Resources said the elementary school had called them to say they thought I was a 'keeper' so HR wanted to know if I would accept the job to work there on Mon. and Fri. Yes! :) This means I'll still be on-call for Tue. Wed. and Thur.

Hoot-hoot! :)
Well I was asleep when you were here earlier, Idealist, as I stayed home from work today. I didn't have much of a voice this morning and I thought it best to get more rest and not risk totally losing my voice. When I phoned the dispatch operator for the on-call Educational Assistants this morning he said I wasn't the only one who had phoned in sick today. :(
It is good to know I have 2 days/week at this elementary school so I know where I'm going and I can have a chance to get to know the students and staff there. It would be even better if I could get more regular work as then I could get back on the benefit plans.
Kell, I had regular work as an Educational Assistant for the last half of the school year at a high school but I was laid off at the end of June due to lack of funding. That is why I'm working on-call, again. Luckily I have been called out every day since the start of school in September but, aside from a 3 week stint last month, most calls are just a day at a time at all different schools and all grades from Kindergarten to grade 12. Good experience but tiring too.
Idealist ... 10 days in a row!! Wooo-hooo!! :D That is good news for your sleeping pattern! I hope it continues for you. Just keep trying to stick with a routine and don't let the other night owls keep you up too late! ;)
Kell, I like your new kitty avatar. :)

Curious - Thank you, my dear. I think I'll start with the Centrum and see how that goes. I actually have been eating better, but I'm still not where I need to be. At least I eat twice a day now instead of once. Carrot sticks, celery, lettuce & water??? Did some magician hypnotize you into thinking you're a rabbit? :p
Kell - Actually, yes, I did go for a spin today. I finally went and picked up the car! It was at my Dad's house, and he lives about twenty-five miles away, so it was a good little drive for me. Beautiful day, too. Then I went and picked up my son after school, which made him happy.

Looks like I'm hooting to myself tonight ...
I worked at an elementary school today and I'm finally getting my energy back. :o
After work I brought home sushi for an easy dinner because my kids had to get back to school for their music concert. It was wonderful! :) My son had 2 trumpet solos in the Jazz band and I was glad I had a front row seat! He also played in the Senior Concert band where he had another solo but it was a much larger band and it wasn't as easy for me to see him. I certainly heard him though. ;) My daughter has just started high school (at the same school as her brother) and she is playing oboe in the grade 9 Concert band. Yesterday the oboe we are renting from the school broke so her band teacher got her a new oboe today which she brought home to try out after school. It was different than the one she was used to but she played very well tonight. She also sang in the Choir. :) Can you tell I was a very proud Mom? :D
Just before heading out to walk to school tonight, my daughter phones her dad long distance to see if he can talk her through the steps to tie her tie. (All of the musicians wear black shirts/blouses and pants with the school tie.) She was trying to juggle the phone while watching in the mirror as she attempted to tie the tie.... and it didn't work. She had asked her brother for help but he didn't remember at the time and he was also rushing around because he had had to walk to his dad's house to find his black shoes. So ...., I do a search on the internet and the 3 of us were then crowded around my computer trying to follow the steps and diagrams! Then my son suddenly remembered and everything was fine.
Tomorrow I'm back to working at the elementary school for my Mon/Fri. job. I'm sad that I won't be able to be at my own kids' school as they are having an Assembly for Remembrance Day and my son is playing the 2 trumpet solos (Revelrie and Last Post). He'll be up there, on his own, in front of 1200 students plus staff and parents. And I'll be thinking of him when I'm at the assembly at my elementary school with all the little kidlets wearing their poppies. :)

Good for you, proud mama Scrabble! Sounds like you've got plenty to be proud about...:D
I never realized before how close in age your kids were to mine. My oldest daughter is in her first year of high-school, too. My son is a senior. He played drums in the school band every year until this one, so I know how proud it makes you feel to sit there and watch him perform...;)
So how did his performance go at the assembly today? How did your assembly go? It's good to hear you sounding back to normal after that cold you've been battling...:)

Is it healthy to drink the Ensure AND take a daily multi-vitamin, or are the two of them together a little too much?
I owe ya a big ol' bunch of bananas for all the nutrition advice you've been giving me. If I can ever find ya...:p

11-15-2006, 09:26 AM
Sorry to disappoint you, Alffe. :)
I thought I should check in since I haven't been here for a few days.
That migraine that started Saturday morning really wiped me out and I was not feeling up to much of anything until late Monday afternoon. So my long weekend was a write-off ... :(
I saw my chiropractor after work yesterday for a craniosacral treatment and I think that has really helped. It was 90 minutes and I had a cozy blanket on me so I eventually felt relaxed enough to doze off .... :)
My chiro worked quite a bit on my temporal bones and at the base of my skull as well as my upper back area (top few ribs and collar bone). There was a lot of tension there and she said I might feel light-headed for a bit so I rested before I left her office. Then I felt quite good ... in fact it was a little bit like I was floating as I walked down the street!
And I slept well too ... :D
Alffe, it was nice to catch you and bizi in the chatroom. :)
Kell, I'm really glad that the shower turned out well for you. :)

I've been on a sort of thoughtful sabbatical the past few days, so I ain't been posting very much. But now my thinker is all thunk out, so maybe I can get back to my old routines again...:p
I wonder what kind of bait is good for luring a bunch of ol' night-owls back to their roost again...
Miss Monkey, I tell ya, I ain't sure if I'm gaining any weight or not... I thought I was, but then today I had to tighten my belt up to it's very last notch. So if I get any thinner, I'm gonna have to get me a new belt!

11-17-2006, 09:31 PM
Hey, Scrabble, that pilates class you take actually came in handy for me the other day! Me & the kiddos were watching Jeopardy, and that was the answer to one of the questions. I only knew it 'cause of you. But it made me look just a little bit smarter...:p
So whatcha been up to the past few days, besides taking pilates classes?

11-18-2006, 01:09 AM
Well I'm glad I helped you out there, with my explanation of pilates! :)
I worked at the same elementary school all week as I was a sub for 2 other EA's (Educational Assistants) at the school where I now work on Mondays and Fridays. It worked well for me because I knew where I was going and what buses to take without having to look them up each day. Also good to get to know the students and staff better. I did have to keep checking my daily schedules since I had 3 different ones over 4 days! There was one girl who made my day yesterday when she asked if I was going to be the sub again today. I told her I would be at her school but I would be working in other classes and she replied "That's too bad. I think you are very kind." She is hard of hearing and has cochlear implants so I had been assisting her by making sure she understood what her teacher was saying. We saw each other twice today and we waved. :)

grandmonkey was beyond excited. at the very end they shot a guy ourt of a cannon. the net was right in front of us. grandmonkey thought the guy was flying like buzz lightyear. lol. lil'monkey had a clown named bb keep teasing her. he would sit on her lap. take her seat. LOL. make people look at her. just the things a teen love.

At one time I actually wanted to take up ballroom dancing, but then never got around to it. It's probably just as well, since I don't even own a suit or a pair of slacks. I guess it wouldn't look proper to do ballroom dancing in a pair of faded jeans and a tee-shirt, huh?

'Course all she keeps telling me is to eat more bananas...
Do you have a real tree? We used to do that every year, but finally we got us a good old plastic one with all the lights wired in place. It doesn't smell as good, but it sure saves me a lot of hassle...:p
Curious
12-08-2006, 09:26 PM
fake tree. i lost a friend in high school to a house fore. their christmas tree caught fire and we was asleep on the couch.
not a pre-strung. my had those. maybe just her luck...but they only last a couple of years. texas heat and putting it inthe attic didn't help i'm sure.
my tree thinks it's real. it likes to drop some needles. but before i put the lights on...i vacuum it. yes. really i do. each limb. then i spray it with a pine scented spray. NOT PINE SOL. :p lol
this year i am not putting the bottom row on. dang thing touches the ground. i am putting one of grandmonkeys train sets going round and round under it. he is letting me "borrow" his one that plays christmas music.
your online advisors says to dip the bananas in choccy and chopped nuts. :D
how is your eating coming? lots of protien? good carbs? feeding the brain? eating often?

no big party this year.
just family. and as far as i know my x. :o our daughter will only be in texas for a few days. it's better to share the time, rather than have her waste time driving back and forth.
i havven't heard back from her tonight...so i might have spoken too early...might have all her texas friends too. :o
how about you?
and i am so glad you are taking the vitamins and the ensure!! how is your energy? pain levels? you know i worry about you. :D
Idealist
12-08-2006, 09:51 PM
Chemar, that IS smart. But it sounds like those kitties would sure be a hoot to watch! Maybe you should put them up their own little tree with little balls of yarn or something to play with...:p
I ain't having nobody over to my place except for those who live here. But I will probably go over to my parents for a while in the afternoon, and enjoy a nice big Christmas dinner. Might even put on a few more pounds then. :D
I've been dealing with some pretty intense pain issues, but I'm pretty sure it's just another cycle. Sigh. Why does it have to happen during the holidays all the time...
Anyway, remember you asked me about Portsmouth? Well now my PC wants to send me to a pain clinic there, so maybe I'll finally get to see it. Can you recommend any good restaurants there? Or was that back before they had restaurants...:p

Afterwards I was really shaking and didn't return to classes in the afternoon. The staff was great - the secretaries brought me an icepack and a cup of tea as I wrote a bunch of notes on the incident. The principal was very good and we all had a chat when the student was calmer. One secretary drove me home at the end of the day. I had taken Advil but as it wore off, I realized how sore I was - all over. Stiff neck and sore lower back.
I have to finish filling out forms that are required for the School Board and Worker's Compensation. I'm glad it is the weekend ....

Gosh, Scrabble, that sounds awful. I hope they give you a medal or something for stepping in like that. Or at least combat pay. How are you doing now? Stuff like that can cause a lot of stress in a person to go along with those bruises and sore muscles. I hope you've been able to shake it off and are feeling better now.
Lara, wow, you're nine hours away from me! That's a purty far piece.
And I see Miss Curious has conked out early again tonight. ;)

Curious, I'm not sure if I know about what happened to your sister ...
Lara, thanks for thinking of me. :Wave-Hello:
Idealist, the soak in the tub on Friday did help, but on Saturday when I woke up I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. I took Advil a couple of times and just took it easy. (Kind of a wasted day ~sigh) :Sigh: I realized when I got kicked in the forehead that the center of my glasses got hit because the bridge of my nose is still sore. Just a couple of visible bruises ... My neck is still sore when I turn my head to the left so I'm glad I made an appointment to see my chiropractor after work today.
Yesterday I had fun at a Christmas Craft Fair. Then I saw the movie, 'The Holiday', and had some
I hope I can catch up with some of you sometime soon! :laptop:

morning scrabble.
my sister was a teachers assistant to special ed classes.
one of the kids got her down on the floor, grabbed her head and smacked it on the floor. the damage to her neck was so severe that she is permenanty disabled. i beleive in chiro care, but be careful. if my sister had gone to her chiro....i know she would be paralyzed.
she ended up having to have pretty much her whole neck fused. she can't turn it all. can't lift even 10lbs.
take care scrabble.

Wow. I didn't know that about your sister either, Curious. That's terrible. I've always thought that it takes a very special kind of person to want to help the disadvantaged. It's an awful shame when something bad happens to them because of it. I sure hope that experience didn't scar your sister too severely emotionally.
Scrabble, I sure am glad to hear that you're feeling better. I take it there are no serious injuries then? You are one of those special ones I was talking about, and all my best thoughts are with you.
I hope both of you gals get the wonderful holidays you deserve so well. And maybe I'll get lucky, too...

I saw my chiropractor this afternoon and it really did help. I can turn my head more easily to both sides now. She is very gentle and I like that. She told me she adjusted my back, shoulders and arms. She could tell that my glasses had been hit because when I took them off she said she could see a mark from the bottom rim of my glasses under my eye and I hadn't noticed that. So ......... $40 later .... I walked out feeling like a new woman :) .... and ....
I went shopping! :Head-Spin:
Surprise sale on at Sears Department store ...
I bought a pair of sensible shoes, a small rolling suitcase with a handle that extends out; and black corduroy pants.

Sounds like the best 40 bucks you ever spent! And that's right, you're going on a vacation soon, aren't ya? Yay for you! I hope you have a stupendous time there.
I haven't figured out any way to get comfortable lately. I got this bruised pain from my left side all the way down to my toes. You should see some of the things I've been trying, LOL. Leaning over the back of the couch to try to sleep. Twisting and contorting myself into all kinds of weird positions. But it is starting to get better, so at least I'm on the mend. Not a minute too soon, either. I still haven't done ANY of my Christmas shopping!

If you think the couch thing sounds weird, you should have seen me when I went to see the doc last week. It's a twenty-five mile drive, and all the way I had to keep shifting positions. Letting the seat all the way down and kneeling on it with my tail in the air. Twisting around every direction. LOL I sure got some strange looks at the stoplights.

All he could really do was refer me back to a rheumatologist. And of course I couldn't get an appointment there until early next year. Shoot, by then the whole episode will be over, and it will be a wasted trip. These pain flares of mine usually last three to four weeks, and it started just before Thanksgiving, so hopefully it'll be over soon.
You know, that's a good idea you have. If you're going to be working with kids that can be so dangerous, there should be some sort of plan in place for sedating or restraining them in case of emergencies. It would be better for the student as well, wouldn't it?
~scrabble
12-11-2006, 10:32 PM
Before I left work today, the principal told me he wants to meet with me and the other Educational Assistant who works with this student, so we can brainstorm about plans for when this happens. Several other staff members have told me they are surprised the kid hasn't been suspended.

I got myself put on that list. But I have experience with this particular RT. His office help isn't very helpful, and are sometimes downright rude. So I'm not expecting any favors.
There's another RT I've seen before, too. But he has a waiting list of six months! Good grief. I waited that long once, but I'm not keen to do it again.
Are you decorating your own house since you're going away for the holidays? Or are you just going to take a break this year? :D
~scrabble
12-11-2006, 10:43 PM
I hung up my quilted advent calendar and filled the present pockets with treats for my kids.
Oh, and yesterday I quilted an ornament using a photo of the chickadee on my hand (like my avatar) so I hung that on a wall near the advent calendar. I found some fabric that goes through my printer so I scanned my photo and printed it out a couple of times to make some ornaments. The other one is for my parents.
I'm still getting my Christmas cards out ... along with another parcel ... that I should be wrapping up tonight ... sooooooooo ... next I need to get my packing organized. Anyway, I don't think I'll do much else to decorate here this year.
How does your house look? And how is your roof doing?

Ha! My house is a joke, LOL. We haven't put up the first decoration yet, or even the tree! We are running very late this year because so much has gone on. But we plan on getting a good start tomorrow, and hopefully the plan will hold this time.
My silly kids have been begging for us to put up lights outside, but I don't see that happening this year...:p
But it sounds like you've been doing some nice personal touches. You are a practical woman, as well as being interesting. That's a good combo.

I got booted and I had an awful hard time getting back in here ...
I have a few outdoor lights that I could put up ... but since we are going away I figure it would just look like we were away if the lights stop getting turned on. I also thought of using a timer ... but we won't be back until into the New Year and usually I wouldn't still have lights on outside by then ...
I hope you do get some decorating started tomorrow.

Last night we had a storm with winds gusting to 100 km/hr and I kept waking up. I had shut down the computer as the lights kept flickering and I was worried the power might go out.
Today my kids' school was closed as they didn't have power. The school I work at had power but, the whole school district had school start an hour later. Lots of large branches all over and some powerlines were down too. Large trees landed on some homes as well. :(

I went to see my GE doc yesterday, and he's done got my head spinning round and round again. Just when they'd finally convinced me it was time to stop all the testing and start treating the symptoms, now they want to switch back again!

Well, let's see Coach. I also had a handful of sunflower seeds, a can of spinach, half a baked chicken breast, and a little mashed potatoes. I know, I know...it ain't a lot. But it's something anyway, right?
The doc I saw kinda rocked my world a bit. He now thinks that I might be suffering from a rare progressive myopathy, or a muscle-wasting disease. He says he's afraid that if they just try to mask the symptoms, I could find myself in real trouble somewhere down the road. So he wants me to see two more specialists in January, and if they can't identify what it is then he wants to refer me to the Mayo Clinic in Illinois!
My head and body was just settling down from all the stuff the put me through this summer and autumn, and I ain't sure I'm ready to go through all of that again.
I'd rather sit back with my ovaltine (sip..sip) and my munchies and chill for a spell, ya know? But what's a fella to do?
So...you be a Texas peach tonight, huh? Well, peaches are very sweet, even when they're a little bruised. Have you been overdoing it again as usual? When are you gonna learn that you're only human, girl. Or only monkey, anyway! :D
