Hi Debbie...
Your question got me to thinking so I went on a little search...
I found a couple of sites that talk about genetic testing and diagnosis for Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's Society -- Canada
http://www.alzheimer.ca/english/care/ethics-genetictest.htm
Medline Plus
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000760.htm#Signs%20and%20tests
Alzheimer's Association -- United States
http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_diagnosis.asp
Hope this helps...

I am also your age and my mom is diagnosed with alzheimers, my question is, how can they be sure at 46, that it is alzheimers and not something else- like my Chiari malformation(a brain disorder) that causes me "brain fog", memory issues, word finding issues, etc. I did have a 3 hr "mental exam" and [I] am afraid to see the interpretation results-because of this. My mother has NOT had a brain MRI, and I am hoping to g et her one soon and hope it shows Cm1, as I have, and not alzheimers. Have you had the EEG done?or the eye test? an article was posted saying both those tests could predict it. I did have a brain MRI and my neurosurgoens made NO mention of alzheimers, but this was before my mom got diagnosed with alzheimer,.

so far i just have alot of questions that go unanswered ... the doctors haven't done any tests on me because of my age ... they say it's just me and i need to deal with it ... my husband and i both think there is more to this than its just me ... just not sure how to get doctors to listen

Hi Deb,
I hope there's a test they can do. I also hope it turns out negative. My Mom had Alzheimer's and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I think it was harder on the family than her in the end though. I don't think she was aware of too much at that point, at least I hope she wasn't.

There are many, different, easily treatable medical conditions that have nothing to do with Alzheimer's disease that can affect and impair memory function. If your memory problems are causing you anxiety, you should urge your doctor to order some diagnostic tests, to find out exactly what the cause is, so that you can be helped as soon as possible. You shouldn't have to live with the constant doubt and worry of "maybe this is Alzheimer's" hanging over you. I hope that it all works out well for you.
