I have sbcglobal dial up...
I keep getting disconnected for no reason I see...
I have contacted them and they told me its my puter and to put the disk in and so a reformat...
OK...The disk I have is from 2001 and it wont do anything its saying the windows on the puter are more updated than the CD.
I have XP and need to know...
How can I get an update CD to reformat for free? I don't feel I should have to buy one seeing I have already paid for it.
My puter did not come with anything about restore except it tells me its built in...
I have tried my system restore and it won't work it says It can't opn due to a file not being found. (framedyn.dll)
Any help would be appreciated it is a pain in the butt having to reboot about every 30 minutes.
thanks
hugs

can you look at your dial up and modem connection settings to see if it is set to reconnect automatically?
or if IE the connection settings are there too.
I know when I had dial up there was a area where we could set it to redial automatically and hold the connection longer to avoid time outs?
places to look-
control panel = modem - network- dial up - connections
I have reinstalled xp or I think is a setting to fix- for missing files ect- maybe that is all you need to do.
If you do reinstall- then just click for all the updates since then
that's how I did it just a couple months ago.
but try to check all the settings first.
or you might be able to just search the XP CD for that missing file??
We had Earthlink for about 2 yrs. Lately is has been horrible. It dropped us, stalled, was just terrible. So we discontinued it and got DSL.
Our city had a free dial-up linked to our library, and it died this summer.
We received a letter saying the equipment being used was antequated, and
wireless is being substituted before 2007. They turned off the dial-up in August.
It just might be that ANY dialup is not going to be very reliable anymore. That is the impression I got concerning us.

"Application Has Failed to Start Because Framedyn.dll Was Not Found" Error Message When You Open the System Properties Dialog Box
You can download framedyn.dll here or in above link. Above link is complicated but worth reading it all to figure out what's going on.
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?framedyn
I'd try downloading the framedyn.dll to see if that'll allow you to do your quick restore. Let us know what's happening.
Just had another thought. I had problems ages ago and wanted to do a full restore. Turned out that my XP didn't come with any backup discs, I had to make them myself, which wasn't a good thing to find out when it was too late and I'd not made the backups myself. I forget what I ended up doing in the end. Hopefully once you download that dll the quick restore will work just fine. If you need any help going through the steps for that just let us know. I've done it as recently as last week LOL eeeeek

Thanks Lara,
When I do start/run/ it says windows can not find...grrrrrrrr
this is a pain....
I still think my son did something to my puter....
found this.

When using System Restore, I receive the following message: 'System restore was unable to start due to a missing Framedyn.dll. Please reinstall the application to fix this problem'. How do I fix this?
A.
This event usually occurs when the Windows path is corrupt. To resolve this issue, begin by installing Windows XP Service Pack 1. Alternatively, you can temporarily address this issue by copying the framedyn.dll file from the \windows\system32\wbem directory to the \windows\system32 directory. If you cannot locate the .dll file in the …\Wbem folder, see Why can't I see system files such as .dll or .inf in Windows?
Q. Why can't I see system files such as .dll or .inf in Windows?
A. Windows hides all system files and files marked hidden by default. To view these files:
1.
Click Start, then My Computer
2.
From the toolbar open the Tools menu, select Folder Options, then click the View tab
3.
In the Advanced settings option for Hidden files and folders, ensure the Show hidden files and folders option is selected and Hide protected operating system files is unchecked. Click OK
4.
You should now be able to see hidden and system files
I have absolutely no idea why it says to install W XP Service pack 1!
Just a thought... are all your installations uptodate, like done automatically?

11-07-2006, 04:50 PM
when did it start acting up? can you restore before that time?
maybe to before that frame file went missing??
also maybe check into -
control panel/folder options/view/show all hidden files and folders
to make sure you can see all that is there
when done hide them again
do you have a profile set up for your kids and others so they only can have limited access? less chance of them messing things up. you would be the admin/profile {full access}
control panel/users

[OK...The disk I have is from 2001 and it wont do anything its saying the windows on the puter are more updated than the CD.]
mine said the same thing when i did it this summer- but i asked if I wanted to proceed anyway {or something like that} and I clicked yes.
My copy is about that old too.
Yours wouldn't do anything ?or ask if you wanted to do it anyway??
you can always get the all the updates again after the reinstall is done.
it's how I did it.
Jo, that's a good point. Trying to restore back to a further date.

Ok- can you try to do a reinstall ?- not a format and see if you can redo it that way as a fix or repair or a full reinstall?
format erases the hard drive
reinstall just overlays all the files again {more or less- simple explanation of it}

And I just spent the last 12 hours redoing mine. I'm still not done cause my computer can't seem to find two of the hard drives that I KNOW are plugged in!!!! AAAAAAAARRRGGGGGGGGGG
But the OLD hard drives died and when I put the new ones in my motherboard decided IT wanted to die too...so I hauled out my husband's old computer with an old graphics card and this computer is a mix of my stuff and his now. When I went to register my copy of XP, I had to actually talk to a human and explain that my computer decided to die. (Third or fourth time I've done this, LOL)
Good thing my copy of XP is a gold copy. Liz

OK Bottom line is .....
I need to get XP out of my puter.....
Can anyone give me directions on how this can be done?
Microsoft won't help me because XP was factory installed.
Compaq won't help me without giving them 60 bucks which I don't have.
anyone know how I can remove XP so I can re install

You will need some type of operating system to put back on there. It will either need to be a copy of XP or it could be linux (which most *distros* are free from the internet). A gold copy which is what a stand alone copy of Microsoft Windows XP Home Sp2b 1pk w/Upgrade Coupon for Vista - OEM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16832116169) is called (one that you buy separately from the computer) typically runs about $90.00 but it is yours and can go on any computer. One that is installed on the computer and is bought WITH the computer has to STAY on the computer so if the computer dies, so does that copy of XP.
Oh, and I FOUND all MY hard drives now. Liz

Do you have a floppy drive and are you willing to format the Pc if thats what it takes?? Also is the OS on a bootable cd that you plan to install?? If it is yes to all of these I found a trick that I use....I boot up with the floppy or the bootable cd and do a fdisk and then I delete the partition and then it allows me to format drive and reinstall whatever Os I want.
Also, you said you have a compaq...do you have a d drive that maybe has the restore windows on it?? My dh has this on his compaq and you can restore everything to factory settings that way.
Hope I did not confuse you.:)

Is there any way to get a gold copy or a copy of the XP to a CD- at no charge?
I mean, if the puter has XP on it - don't you have a right to have a backup in case its corrupted? Will MSoft allow you to have one, or give you one,
or let you DL one fom the MSoft site, for free?
I'd think a reciept for purchase of the system should let you get it. Hunh?

Jen - If you don't mind losing all your data - or back it up by copying to a CD- then you can do a full reformat of the harddrive and start back with a fresh install.
then your XP CD should work
or Linux OS are in many Linux books in the libraries if you wan tto try those FREEE
only problem for me is the wireless connection - if a wire or straight to modem -easy

Compaq CLAIMS I can use the CD I have I just need to pay them and they will intruct me.
They say I should have known to do back up restore CD's when I bought this dang thing.
SO I am at a loss and about ready to give up...
I have searched the web over and over and I can't find the HOW TO
Geez, scary stuff.
My son is still asleep or I'd ask him. (early Thurs. morn. in au.) When all this happened with my Compaq, they told me the same thing. I should have done the backups to cds myself as soon as I could. Well, I hadn't and it really annoys me that they expect people to do that themselves anyway.
The disc that came with my Compaq could only be used ONCE for some reason. My son tried to use it and it didn't work... corrupted, something. So then I was stuck with the Compaq CD which wouldn't work and no backups. I asked him quickly yesterday what we ended up doing and he couldn't really remember, but I think we ended up totally clean intalling Windows XP and having to start afresh.
I'm so sorry you're having these problems. At this point in time I'd probably be happier to pay someone else to help you do it than Compaq. I can't believe they want to charge you to help.
You're probably sick and tired of all this by now, but here's a site in case you need to clean install Windows XP
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
ugh, good luck.
Just had a thought. You still have all the books that came with it???
I've got mine somewhere but they're boxed up. I'll try to find them, but can't get to them until later this morning. All my books are still in storage in someone's garage.
I just read where you said "Guess I just go to add/remove programs and DELETE all and anything with the word windows in it...."
I wouldn't do that!!!
If you're going to do a clean install it's a waste of time.

Question tho... WHen I download the framedyn.dll where to I save it at..
Does it matter
Jo*mar

I make a download file - for on my desktop and send all downloads to it
then I can always find them easy
then you can copy it to the windows file??
I don't know if it needs to be in a specific place in that?
I think there is a .dll section??
and it might need to be in that.
hhmmnn, I just looked and I don't have framedyn.dll in the dllcache on my compaq either.
Anyway,
This is from a spybot forum where someone was having same problem.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=668&page=2
framedyn.dll error message FIX
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type %systemroot%\system32\dllcache, and then click OK.
In that folder that opens up look to see if you have a file named "framedyn.dll"
If you dont then you need to download it first by going to this site
http://www.driverskit.com/dll/framedyn.dll/852.html and downloading it.
In the middle of the screen there is a blue link that sais "framedyn.dll Download" in blue text click on it and it will say that its extracting the file. Wait until it is finished and it will give you the option to save it to your hard drive. Do so and then after the file is done downloading to the location you have it set to download it to drag that file into the folder called "dllcache" that is the one that opens up after you completed step 2 above.
3. Right-click framedyn.dll, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu that appears.
4. Click Start, and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type %systemroot%\system32\wbem, and then click OK.
6. On the Edit menu, click Paste. If you are prompted to replace the existing file, click Yes.
I'll post there here for now. I want to check it out. Just woke up. Need to wake up to check it out better.

Ok, I may be a bit late to the party but I have to chip in here.
The reason you are not being allowed by your computer to reinstall Windows is because the disk you have is old. Stating what you already know, I know, but there is a reason.
Microsoft stopped supporting older versions of Windows XP. The version you have on disk is one of the older, unsupported versions.
In order to get security and critical updates, you must have a minimum of what's called, 'Service Pack 2' usually abbreviated to SP2 - this is one a range of updates rolled out by Microsoft since the development of Windows XP.
Your computer, over time, will have gradually been updated - the first major update to Windows XP was Service Pack 1 (SP1). For a long time, a person could update their computer from a very early version of XP, then Microsoft would only allow critical updates for users who had SP1 installed. This went on for a time until we get to the current stage where only SP2 is supported.
This all works fine if you have kept your computer updated and do not have the early version of XP.
If unfortunately, you try to install from a very early version, your computer will not get updates. So, it is not a good idea to format the HD or remove Windows XP from your system.
To your original problem with the dialup ... often, when you phone up these helplines they tell you any old nonsense just to get you off the phone; 'reinstall the ISP software' reinstall Windows, reinstall the chair you're sitting on, whatever. Don't fall for it.
They have a limited time to deal with customers and they MUST deal with them within that time. If they fail to do so it means their performance is slipping, ergo, they want you off the phone so they will tell you any old rubbish about reinstalling whatever because they know it will take hours to do it and they will probably be finished their shift by the time you get back on the phone.

You can install any legal version of XP, with or WITHOUT SP2 even now (I have a copy provided BY Microsoft for partners that does NOT have any SP at all and just reinstalled it on the 10th of Nov.
However to get updates, you do have to run the validation tool and you really do need sp2 to avoid LOTS of extra updates. I always run sp2 after I've finished the installation of xp so I have a working firewall and then add a/v and a real firewall. Then I go for the other updates.
But bottom line, unless the cd has a scratch in it or something, any version of xp can be installed with or without sp2.
Microsoft just discontinued updates on the version without sp2 installed. Liz
