I was up at 3:45 walking the dog. Hubby just lets her out and she goes wild in the backyard waking up everybody. Me I got up and walked her up the street. She tinkled twice and we went home. Put her back in her crate and that was that. I wasn't one bit scared walking at 3:45am...if I didn't scare the caca outa somebody, the dog would get em.

I got back up at 6:50, took Robert to choir practice and then on to McDonald's for breakfast for Mikey and me.

Good Morning Alffe, Chemar and Julie :)

Hey...can't a guy be an Early Bird AND a Night Owl...:D

Brownies are brownies, whether it's a.m. or p.m.

Since I go through my spells of up to 48 hours with no sleep, I could easily flap from one roost right to the other...

11-08-2006, 04:01 PM
Oh...by the way...might I politely inquire as to what kind of sound an Early Bird makes???

I hope it doesn't involve singing, or my neighbors might have something to say about my membership...:p

Oh, wow! Sounds for Kell and Scrabble??? I don't know that I'm qualified, Curious.

If a Canadian owl says something like two-wit, or whatever it was, what do ya reckon a Canadian Early Bird would say...:p Maybe somethin' like "chir-rup-chee". LOL ;)

And let's see, Kell has her little hee-hee thing always going. Maybe SHE should be the one who does the cheep-cheep. It fits, doesn't it???

top o' the mornin' to you Alffe!

We have a glorious bright and sunny day starting here in central Florida....cool low 60s expected to reach around 80 as a high

This is the time of year that I so appreciate living here.

Looking out my office window to the stream and woods behind our home, I see
the family of mallard ducks enjoying their early morning swim and a crane doing some fishing ..........

Morning girls:)
I am going to do a bit of shopping with my mom today.
She is going to help me with the gifts for the bridal shower on sunday.
She is such a good mommy:)
I'm still not real excited about being around so many people-but at least the burden of getting a gift has been lifted!:)
Chemar
You have an absolutely beautiful view!
Iam sooo jealous:p
I dont even wanna tell you what i have to look at.
I will just say i live in the yucky ole city!

Chick-a-dee-dee-dee! (It goes with my avatar)

Lovely views, Chemar. :)

I woke up to rain and major wind. Gusting to 80-90 km/hr! I ran outside to retrieve the large umbrella from my patio table which had taken off in the wind and was wedged against a fence at a neighbour's townhouse. :(

I am not looking forward to fighting this wind to go out and take 2 buses to work today.

It is a long weekend (Rembrance Day holiday on Monday) and already the first 2 ferry sailings to/from the mainland have been cancelled due to the wind. Well, I wasn't planning on going away anyway ....

Have a great Friday!

Alffe
11-10-2006, 11:10 AM
Oh Scrabble....we loved riding that ferry over to see you! thanks for the memory....course there was no wind that day and we just enjoyed our breakfast while looking at the scenery.

Chemar....I love your pictures...what a gorgous view out your windows.
I used to have beautiful flower beds...now I have piles of dirt! :o

Julie I hope your sleeping like a little baby. :)

Chemar

we were really blessed to find this neighborhood........in front, we are a regular small subdivision....just a single u shaped road and 3 tiny cul-de-sacs, with modest homes, on 1/4 acre plots

but the backyards on our side of the road are what makes it so unique!

Our area has a chain of lakes connected by streams and waterways. As it is classified Florida wetlands, and we have nesting eagles, whooping cranes, ospreys and other protected birds, our precious greenbelt out back cannot be levelled for development:p

sooooo, now you all see why I am such an early bird.......cos the ones out back chirp, cheep, honk etc me awake at dawn:D

here is one of our more regal neighbors

blech..chemar buddy...you were right about my gourmet dinner from jaque n'boxe. my tummy rebelled against such fine cuisine.

kell...you have to tell us what you bought? i'm a treasure hunter type of shopper. i love to go to thrift shops...out of the way places to find that treasure. even for clothes. but otherwise...i am a female who hates to shop. go figure..hubby loves it.

i hope you get some rest julie. you have a fun fun weekend coming up. i am sooo glad you have me on speed dial. #20. i'll come bail you out. :p

Chemar....is that a Coopers Hawk in the picture?

Lara you start the next wakeup.....LOL

Chemar
11-10-2006, 04:46 PM
Hi Alffe

honestly dont know which kind of hawk it is...........it is large tho, with a good 2 ft + wingspan, and we have a lot of them living in the woods here.
They have a piercing cry when they start their hunting early morning (tho not quite as piercing as the night call of the screech owls that also live here:eek: )
I have seen the eagles flying, and dipping the water, but never seen one of them stationary close up, only in the tree tops

That particular hawk loves to sit there on the fence between me and my neighbour, and survey the stream.........doesnt seem in the slightest nervous of us and my husband got real close to it to take that photo

We have lots of birds resident here because of the mild winters, but also have large flocks of migratory birds that pass through each year, including real big storks

Alffe
11-10-2006, 05:16 PM
We are "birders"....numerous feeders, bird baths..I make suet for them. That picture reminds me of the Cooper Hawk that would hide in our ewes, waiting for the small birds to come to the bird bath and then swoop out and grab them in midair....take them to the fence and before my very eyes....well, you know.

When I would fuss and complain my older brother always said "It's survival of the fittest...get over it." Easy for him to say....he was a hunter. LOL Just like the dang hawk.

~scrabble
11-10-2006, 08:44 PM
I've seen a Cooper's Hawk in my wee yard and it caught a sparrow by landing on it on the fence .... and then it started to jump up and down and I had to look away. :(

Just yesterday I saw a hummingbird flit through my yard. There is one type that does stay all year here as our winters are usually quite mild.

My avatar is a photo I took last winter, while visitin my parents in a colder prairie province. I had peanuts on my hand and my camera in my other hand. I snapped a lot of blurry shots of the chickadees flying away before I caught this one on my hand!

Alffe
11-10-2006, 10:46 PM
I love the chickadee call...often "talk" to them...chickadee, dee, dee, and they do answer.
They use that to determine how far away prediters are....

Laughing Kookaburra - Dacelo novaeguineae
Australian Government - Dept. of Environment and Heritage
Australian National Botanic Gardens

This Australian bird is called the bushman's alarm clock - laughing Kookaburra. You'll hear why.
They call, usually in groups back and forth to each other, at daybreak and at sundown... like clockwork, but they also call at times during the day.
They mate for life and live for about 20 years if they're fortunate.

I reckon 'cause they're up so early they get most of the worms.

Hope it makes you laugh too LOL ;)

Have a good Thursday! :)

Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

Morning. :)
Glowing red sunrise today. Cool crispy air making a change from the usual humid heat.

News of the morning.

Well, there's icebergs drifting off the coast of New Zealand. There's snow in places where it wouldn't usually be snowing this time of year. The firefighters are battling dreadful fires and we've had hail stones the size of cricket balls battering places around here and it actually snowed in one part of my state yesterday in a town called Stanthorpe, which is usually cold place in winter but rarely would snow, and it is Summer here technically on 1st December...

If you get a chance to check out the pics. of the icebergs floating off NZ, then they're worth a look. Amazing.

Glad you got the sound to work on the kookaburra call. That's the bird in my avatar. It starts off with one, alffe, but then others join in.

So, must be coffee time now. I'm late today. It's 4.52am Friday the 17th of November and school is over for the year and it's all WHOPPPEEEEEEEEE around here.

11-16-2006, 08:37 PM

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet. If the file is located a removable storage card, insert the storage card." (and I am connected to the internet ... )

You ain't the only one who's get the wet weather, Scrabble. I feel like we're going to drown here in VA if it don't let up soon! This morning we had some pretty severe T-storms, and the wind blew several shingles off the roof. I woke up to the sound of water drip-dripping in my son's bedroom.

We have an extremely tall house, and there's no way I can climb up there these days. Especially not in the rain. So I had to gather up all the pots and buckets I could find and set them around, LOL. Boy what fun.

Lara
11-17-2006, 03:10 PM
I'm late. It's 6am Saturday. I was busy writing a couple messages.

I'm sorry some of you can't get to hear the kookaburra. I can't figure out what is up with that at all. Mine actually opened with QUICKTIME.

Yes, school is out. Our school year is from end of January or beginning of February to somewhere in late November and early December depending on which year in school. Our summer technically begins on the 1st of December.

I hope the storms pass for you all who are experiencing them

Brrrrr ..... it is snowing (and we very rarely get snow here) ....

Just yesterday I bought a jacket on sale that is water repellant and has a zip out fleece jacket in it for added warmth.

If this snow keeps up, the kids at the elementary school where I work tomorrow are going to be very excited to play outdoors at recess. (And as I'm standing around supervising, I'm going to be very glad I have a new warm jacket!)

I have flowers in pots by my front door and they are getting covered in snow. When we do get snow here, it usually just melts as it hits the ground, but not now. This makes me worry about the hummingbirds that stay year-round here .... :(

I went to bed late last night ... wondering about how I would manage to get to work in all of this snow. I take the bus and I know the snow really slows down all traffic, especially since we rarely get snow that stays and we just don't have the snow plows to deal with it.

I got up early to turn on the tv and found out that all schools are closed. I'm relieved that I can just stay home! Then I bundled up to head out to shovel my walk and my neighbour's walk. He is a senior who moved from South Africa 10 years ago and he has never seen this much snow! He phoned me yesterday to talk about it and he described his view from his window as "it looks like a huge pillow fight going on out there!" When I was shovelling his walkway yesterday (for the 3rd time) and the snow kept coming down, he called out his front door and offered me a cup of soup! I think he enjoyed the company when I took him up on his offer. :)

Alffe
11-29-2006, 05:42 AM
Has it all melted now? We are having warm balmy days but there's a front headed our way....*grin. There's always a spoiler in the forcast. I wonder where the shovel is? Yesterday I had the snow tires put on my car and everyone at Curves thanked me...said now it won't snow for sure! :D

I'm not sure if you are an early bird or a night owl, Alffe .... (it says you posted at 2:40 am!)

The snow is still here and the sidewalks are a mess of bumpy ice and snow. Yesterday it took me about 30 min. to walk to the Univ. and then my bus was 20 minutes late. Brrrr..... :(

The forecast is for more snow to come.

I have some pretty icicles hanging from the bottom edge of my balcony out back. :)

On mine it says I posted at 5:40 a.m. Icicles!! Makes me think of the snowflakes we made out of pipe cleaners and borax???? LOL It continues to be warm here but they are saying look out tonight! Two inches of rain which will change to freezing sleet...then snow. :o

This is a week now of coping with tons of snow and ice. A couple of nights ago it rained all night and then by morning it had frozen. Not enough warm weather to melt it yet. This is the worst we've seen in 10 years and our city just isn't equipped to deal with it. There are areas where the public buses still can't get into because the roads haven't been cleared.

On Thur. our schools opened an hour later in the morning in hopes that the streets would be a bit better. A teacher at my elementary school fell on the ice and broke a bone in her hand. I also saw on the news that a mail carrier fell and later died from his head injury.

I think this weekend it would be a good time to stay in and do my Christmas cards, some baking and working on gifts. I finished another scarf for a homeless person .... they could really use all the warm stuff they can get now.

No, but I was a Brownie. Our leader was a BrownOwl. :)
I was so tiny I could sit under the mushroom. (it was about 3 ft tall)
It's sorta quaint when I think about it all today. No wonder I've always believed in fairies. :)

My mean relatives threw away all that stuff from when I was young. I had heaps of them. I used to have to handsew them on my sleeves of my uniform. Although, I still have my prefect badge from my senior year. Now that was something for a small high school in Australia. It had a rocket ship on it. We went space age. lol No idea why, but I guess it coincided with Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins' little adventure up yonder. I'll take a pic. of that one day and post it. I will have to find my scanner first. Most of my stuff is still boxed up from my last move. I have a few neat ten-pin bowling badges too. Can't do that any longer though. There were three of us living in the same cul-de-sac and one of them asked us if we wanted to join a league. Never really done anything like that before. We blitzed it. It was very cool. :)

The whole idea of those badges is pretty cool. They're better than Gold Stars on a cardboard sheet... great incentive for children to learn skills.

Curious

Not an early bird here today. Cheep Cheep.

I actually slept until 10:00, though I woke up at 5:00, 7:00 and 8:30. Ranger has taken to...unexplainably, sleeping at my feet or in the crook of my knees. This morning when I woke up at 8:30 he walked up me and settled in right at my face purring. It was really cute. He so prefers to sleep with Michael.

Knock on wood, Robert is feeling much better. I was really scared that it might be strep and happy that it just seems to be really sore throat. He's quite upset that he used Super Glue to glue an axle on one of his models and it glued it to the body. Ya know, I tried to tell him, but noooooo.

I'm so hungry, but have this craving for big fat french fries. Have you ever been up here to Judge Beans??? They have such good burgers.

Curious
