Somehow it has lost its sensitivity -- maybe a breakdown in the myelin sheath of the internal wires??? (Took me three clicks to get that smiley face.) Sheesh! The little hand is there and it looks like it's doing its job, but somehow it just doesn't "connect" unless I move the cursor and click around the area.

As far as I know it does its own virus scan every 3:00 a.m.
I got my brand new Windows 7 in the mail, but haven't installed it yet. Not sure if I dare! I'm bound to goof something up.

"Windows 7 Default UAC Bypassed By 8 Out Of 10 Malware Samples"
{that means 8 malware infected the machine}

[On October 22nd, researchers settled in at SophosLabs and loaded a full release copy of Windows 7 on a clean machine. They configured it to follow the system defaults for User Account Control (UAC) and did not load any anti-virus software. They grabbed the next 10 unique samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed to see how well the newer, more secure version of Windows and UAC held up. Unfortunately, despite Microsoft’s claims, Windows 7 disappointed just like earlier versions of Windows. The good news is that, of the freshest 10 samples that arrived, 2 would not operate correctly under Windows 7.]

Hi All!!

Well, I hooked up the Microtek 4800. works fine, but there is no power button.

I'm afraid to leave it on because when I picked up the lid, the bright light was on. Doesn't that waste a bulb or something?

Instead of unplugging it from the outlet, can't I just unplug the power thing from the BACK of the scanner, and then when I want to use it, I can simply re-plug the thing back into it?

Will that un-install anything?

do I have to leave this thing plugged in 24/7?

Thanks much.

Funny, that something doesn't have a power button.

I did read (on some website), that it has a power saver option, BUT I CAN'T FIND OUT ANYTHING ABOUT THAT FEATURE.

thanks, Melody

Wow, is this a cool birthday present or what? And yes, today I am 62 years young.

Yesterday I was walking around the corner and everyone had thrown out their stuff for the sanitation guys. On top of some stuff was this perfectly lovely Microtek 4800 scanner. I used to have a scanner years ago but it is now not compatible with Windows XP, and yeah, I know Vista has come and gone, and now we have Windows 7 but I'm still going strong with my XP.

So I grabbed the scanner (thankfully it still had the power adaptor connected). I found a usb 1 cable in my drawer. BUT THERE WAS NO MANUAL AND NO CD ROM.

So I went online, downloaded all the manuals and saved it to my hard drive. I learned how to use it BEFORE hooking it up.

I then connected all the peripherals (I did this 30 minutes ago, by the way). This thing has bells and whistles and I'm saying to myself "why would someone throw this out"? then I got it.

He probably bought an ALL IN ONE PRINTER, FAX SCANNER THING.

So I now have a brand new Microtek 4800 scanner and it WORKS!!!

I printed out a test page. I'll probably never use all the features but

WHO CARES!! I GOT A FREE SCANNER.

lol

Holy Cow!!!

I was speaking to my neighbor one day last month and I was saying "they don't make VCRs any more, and I love VCRs. And he said "oh you want VCRs, I have two or three, I don't use them, they are in the basement, we have all DVRs in my house."

Well!!!! I said "don't you dare throw any of them away". He then went inside and gave me one of them saying "I'll give you the others, they are buried under my stuff". We'll do this later".

I was so excited to have ONE vcr (A beautiful JVC), that who cared when I got the others.

I immediately hooked it up, and have been using it ever since.

So the other night when I came home from visiting a friend, I walk into the house and Alan greets me with "Oh John just gave you a DVD player and he says he'll give you the other VCRs later on, he just found this one".

I went over to the table and there was this Magnavox DVD player (with remote).

Now you have to undersand. I HAVE NEVER HAD A REAL DVD PLAYER in my home. Only that little portable one.

So I went on youtube and tried to find a tutorial showing how to hook it up.

Well!!!! all I saw was Home entertainment systems, and AV1 and Video imput this. I just shook my head.

I just went into the living room saying to myself "melody, you can do this". I know what RCA cables are (because I watched the youtube videos) and I had these cables in my home.

Five minutes ago, I hooked up the rca cables to the front of the tv in the living room. The red into red, etc. etc.

I turned the dvd player around and saw many different inputs, two red things, green things, yellow things, etc.

I said 'now how am I going to know which goes where? There were two video plugs, there was an S video thing.

I just took my best educated guess.

AND IT WORKED.

You should have seen the expression on my face when I put in a dvd player, put my tv to Video 2 (which I had also learned from watching the tutorial on youtube).

AND IT PLAYED.

Thank goodness for youtube.

And this forum.

lol

I NOW CAN WATCH DVD's with Alan , in the living room. We each have our own headphones (each equipped with in-line volume control) so we can put the volume as low or as high as needed.

what a neet setup. AND NOW WE CAN WATCH MOVIES.

It takes SO LITTLE to make me happy.

lol lol lol
I am trying to install the software for the new printer. its an office jet 6500 by HP, and it wont install because it said "windows7 was an exepected OS" it wants XP or Vista and refuses to go further. Do I need a patch? am I out of luck till HP catches up. The front of the machine said "windows 7 ready!" sure, if I use the USB and plug it in, I can use it as a printer, but I want to be able to use the great software that is supposed to be part of the package.

I hate new computers. wow are they fun once they are set up, but getting them there...give me a break. I have had my oldie for a looooong time, and we finally broke down and got a new system. its gonna take days to catch up, and the new OS is tricking all my old stuff.

Okay, don't get me started.

I'm a relatively intelligent woman who has BEEN FAXING SINCE FAXING WAS INVENTED.

In my living room, I have my Brother Intellifax 1270 hooked up to my answering machine (been this way for 18 years).

When my cartridge ran out (because I was getting stupid spam faxes every day), we never replaced the cartridge. BUT WE STILL WERE ABLE TO SEND FAXES. I know because people confirmed this.

Well, some time ago I had to fax Alan's medical stuff to a doctor and all they got was black pages.

I then went to the near by store and faxed from there.

Well, I just found out that yet again, (last week, but they just told me now), that they got black pages from my faxing them.

So I checked all connections. My phone (which is on the fax machine), had a dial tone. My fax was giving me the fax tones. IT SEEMED TO BE WORKING FINE.

I tried to fax again. She got black page at her end.

I said "Hmmm, let me see if this is connected the way it says in the manual.

IT WASN'T. I had the line from the wall thing going into the wrong place. (even though I got dial tones and fax signals, no one was getting my faxes).

So I just viewed the manual online.

this is what it says to do (and I just did this).

1. Plug the telephone line cord from the wall jack into the left side of the fax machine, in the jack labeled LINE. I DID THIS

2. Plug the telephone line cord from your TAD into the left side o the fax machine, in the jack labeled EXT (Makd sure this cord is connected to the TAD at the TAD'S telephone line jack, and not it's telephone set jack).

I DID THIS TOO!!!

3. Set the Answer Mode to Tad. (I have no idea what this means)

4. Set your external Tad to 4 rings or less (it is).

5. Set the Tad to answer calls (my answering machines ALWAYS works.

I just tried to fax my friend. I made sure I had a dial tone, I got the beeps, she gave me her number.

Guess what?

BLACK PAGE.

So what do I do next?

Why would a fax machine not be able to send faxes?

And why do they come out at the other end BLACK PAGES.

See, the fax is going through, no?? but the print is not.

GRRRRRR

Melody lol
