Our Yellow finches:

We have quite a few yellow finches. They start to nest in late July when the flowers set seeds. They favor black eyed susans and Echinacea types. We also have purple finches, but I haven't seen them take the nesting fluff yet.

This morning we have a little female taking nesting materials.
I have an inexpensive corn cob holder for winter for the squirrels.
In spring I stop feeding them, and I put in nesting cotton fluff for the birds.

I do this mostly for the hummingbirds, which hubby saw this morning taking the fluff as well. But other birds take it too.

Oh my, she is back for a second load. She is really taking ALOT or it is another female. Big beak fulls. It is getting pretty decimated!
I'll have to put some more out!

WalMart and Lowe's typically have these too...they are so inexpensive. A friend gave me mine, and we really enjoy all the wildlife coming to it all year round!

MrsD, are your yellow birds Goldfinches or some other finch variety? I have Goldfinches and a few Purple Finches.

Have you ever watched the hummingbird migration map at hummingbirds.net? Fascinating! I got to put up a dot one time, when I lived in Mississippi.

I love watching birds build nests! Last year an Eastern Phoebe built a nest over the light fixture on the front porch. They stack nests for each egg laying, and at the end of the season there were 3 distinct layers. Each nest had babies!

Yes, they are the Goldfinches. The male (he is bright yellow with black markings) is coming with the female (who is olive colored) and they fly off together after she has taken what she needs. But I haven't seen the male gather the fluff at all today.

At the rate it is going down, the wire holder will be empty by
nightfall! LOL It is 1/2 gone already!

We feed the little birds in a tube feeder in winter so they stay near us. We also have a backyard feeder with sunflower and millet, for the larger birds.

I've never had the fluff out this late, so this is the first time I've seen the pretty little finches coming for it.

We've refilled the wire holder. This is their second load, and I still see females coming to it today.

I have noticed a few finches in the silver mound! lol. They pull it apart. The nest is in the maple in front, I believe to be goldfinches.Their "home" was constructed with the silver mound greenery, for there is some in the lawn below the nest.

yellow finches are eating my sunflower seeds,
they are very pretty birds!
I mainly have red winged black birds and cardnalis.
So it's nice to see new birds.
