Birthday present to myself
Last weekend I turned 43, and I did something I've dreamed of doing for years. I jumped out of an airplane! I went tandem skydiving, freefall from 10,000 feet, then a nice long float down. BEST. THING EVER. The weather was perfect, low 70's and breezy, and the trees were in full color. I didn't want to come down.
There is a place near here that specializes in beginners and tandem skydiving. They did an awesome job, and I have video from ground to plane and throughout the jump. The instructor let me "fly" the chute, and then he took over and did some really wild maneuvers. I think we did a complete loop! I had let him know about my MS and that I was feeling fine that day. He said the only thing that might be a problem was the landing because I needed to be able to keep my feet up, so if I felt like I couldn't to let him know and he would help me. It turned out fine.
I've been having symptoms that may indicate an additional autoimmune disease (like MS isn't enough!), and I was determined to check this experience off my want-to list. Who knows if I'll be physically able in the future? I would do it again in a heartbeat - I was ready to go right back up as soon as we landed. If you've ever thought skydiving might be something you'd want to do, I encourage you to GO FOR IT!
