You probably know what Tourette's syndrome looks like - involuntary facial tics, coughs, sometimes vocalizations including curse-words. It's not an uncommon neurological condition.
In any case, it's a media favorite. Think solemn TV docs of a man standing in church yelling obscenities against his own will, the voice-over all gentle tea-and-sympathy, the congregation stoic and understanding. But as a televised spectacle it surfs the contours of lurid Victorian freak-show. It's us, looking at them.
Imagining how it must feel like to enter a room full of strangers, and begin a series of such tics, is not so easy as watching some other fellow suffer from its effects.
But a new game in development is seeking to do just that, to put non-sufferers into the shoes of those who live with this condition, and its inevitable social hazards. This is what games can do, they are able to give us insights into effects and consequences that pure observation denies...................
