Four is about the age where they show hypothyroid in many cases but I'm a bit surprised (putting it mildly) that the vet would prescribe a medication without a diagnosis for a condition that can be definitively diagnosed. For Pete's sake it could be anything.

A thyroid panel isn't that expensive and being on the medication will require some blood work initially as you monitor levels. I would hope. Sheesh.

The good news is hypothyroid in dogs isn't usually that difficult or expensive to treat. I hope he feels better soon.

My dad worked as a nurse for very close to 50yrs. He told me once he was doing the anesthesia (an epidural) for a woman having a baby. After the baby was born, someone in the room asked her what she wanted to name the kid (apparently a little girl) She thought for a moment, and then asked how to spell "betadine". My dad said all the medical people in the room had to contain their giggles, and the father, that was also in the room with the mom, said it was a beautiful name.

Someone helpfully told her how to spell it.

(Betadine is an iodine based antiseptic used as a surgical scrub)

My dad thinks the woman thought that betadine was the name of one of the nurses.

In all fairness the hair condition would take a while to clear up but fwiw the pooch I had with hypo-t didn't have any fur problems.

Erin, I once met a woman named Vastine and when I complimented her on her pretty name she told me her father named her after a jar of Vaseline he saw in the room when she was born.
