Default 150 myclonic jerks when I lay down to sleep

desperation drove me to massive Google search on the jerking that happens to me every night when I stop reading and turn off the light to sleep and again in the early am and I can't go back to sleep cos I'm so busy jerking
I get a building sensation than wham! a huge jerk seems like in my tail bone and thighs , it is over so quickly that I can't tell exactly where it is coming from.
I take magnesium, electrolytes in coconut water , I weigh 124 pounds so not fat.
this is going on now for 6 years - sometimes it goes away just enough for me to stop worrying but 3 nights now and never ending jerks for hours on end , also get giant cramps in one leg and have benign fasciculations that come and go.
I'm thinking I should get an MRI of my spine in case I have some weird tumor or something.

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

Please make sure you are using a magnesium that is absorbed.
Oxide form is not, and will not do much of anything for you.
You need a good chelate, like gluconate, lactate, malate, or glycinate. Aim for 200mg elemental which is 1/2 RDA, or use SlowMag, twice a day (it is chloride in delayed release).
You can get the SlowMag at WalMart.
Oxide is really common and still out there, and people think it will do and it will not.

You could try soaking in a tub of epsom salts, in lukewarm water,
and that may help... the magnesium will be absorbed thru the skin directly in the areas you are having problems with. Use about 6oz in a bathtub. Don't use really hot water, as it may sting.

Some myoclonus comes from higher in the spine however.
So a soak won't reach there as quickly.

Many people may jerk when falling asleep now and then, but regularly is not the same thing.

Are you taking any Benzodiazepine drug at night or during the day? When they wear off there can be mini-withdrawals, which include jerking like this, or cramping. (Xanax, Valium or
Klonopin)

Welcome,

Glad you came to NT. there's lots of folks here that re willing to help.

Isn't mrsD great? She knows her stuff.

Have you undergone a sleep study? Not sure bout seizure type activity, but it has some of the chakras tics of it. Left untreated or undisguised, then it would reoccur.

I hate not knowing. It's the worst.

Praying you get answers soon.

This happens to me as well. My Dr said it is due to my pain meds. I take 3 percocet a day.

They happen all day and at times get so bad I have broken my glasses from hitting myself in face.

All of my blood work has come back normal. All help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the reply
I had an MRI and it showed stenosis , and cervical bulges and a possible pinched nerve- since then the myoclonic jerks are intolerable - I'm wondering if I have MS ...at 68?-
My arms are always numb in the morning , my body hurts all over, I am exhausted when I wake up and my doc says back surgery I don't trust docs at all and if I can figure this out on my own I can fix it .

I have the same problem. I know it comes from either my Chiari or MS, but these myoclonic jerks are so frustrating and irritating that I have so much difficulty falling asleep and I wake up so often just from the pain. I take Xanax when I go to sleep, it helps a little but the jerks can be so violent sometimes I end up hitting myself or my husband.

I hope that these jerks improve for you, and if you come across something that helps I would love some advice.

Have a great evening and Blessed Be,

Default Night Jerks

Hi,This is my first post also. I have exactly the same problems, except I get woken up about an hour after I fall asleep. I get the same building up feeling followed by a body jerk then the build up feeling starts again an so on.. The only medication I have found to work is Tramadol, I've tried many things and have had brain and mri scans. My problems started following spinal surgery five years ago, up to that point I only had RLS. I take a low dose of tramadol every night two hours before sleep and this completely stops the jerks. Hope this helps.
